# Insurance for electroplating, powder coating and surface finishing in Germany

> Open tanks of acid, chrome and nickel, curing ovens and powder booths: a plating or coating shop in Germany carries environmental and fire risks most small firms never face. And because you finish other people's parts, a bad batch damages your customer's goods as well as your reputation. This page explains what surface finishing businesses need, what German law says and what cover roughly costs.

## Am I covered if I ruin a customer's parts during coating?

Not automatically. Many German liability policies exclude damage to items you are working on. You can add cover for processing damage, usually with its own limit. For plating and powder coating this is one of the key points in the contract. Redoing your own work is never insured.

## At a glance

- **Compulsory:** No general compulsory insurance. Under § 89 of the German Water Resources Act you are liable for substances escaping from your plant into water even without fault
- **Permit:** Plants with process tanks of 30 m³ or more need a permit under the Federal Immission Control Act (4th BImSchV, Annex 1 No. 3.10)
- **Biggest risk:** A leaking tank contaminating soil or water, and fire in a powder booth, extraction system or oven
- **Trade status:** Electroplating is a licence free craft under Annex B of the German Crafts Code, so no master craftsman certificate is required
- **Often forgotten:** Damage to customer parts while you work on them, which standard liability policies often exclude

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Tank leak:** A cracked tank or burst pipe lets acid, chrome or cyanide solution reach the soil, sewer or groundwater. Clean up and expert reports quickly run into six figures.
- **Booth fire:** Powder dust burns, and extraction systems and filters collect it. One spark or an overheated curing oven can set the hall alight.
- **Customer parts ruined:** Wrong coating thickness, blistering or hydrogen embrittlement: the parts are scrap, or they fail later at the customer.
- **Production line stopped:** If coated parts do not fit during assembly, your customer claims sorting, replacement and line downtime.
- **Rectifiers and ovens fail:** A broken rectifier or burner halts the line, and spare parts often take weeks.
- **Burns and fumes:** Splashes from tanks and fumes during make up cause some of the worst workplace injuries in the trade.

## The insurance you need

- **Business contents** (Essential): Replaces tanks, rectifiers, booths, ovens and customer goods after fire, water, storm or burglary. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-contents.php

- **Machinery breakdown** (Strongly advised): Covers breakdown of rectifiers, curing ovens, powder plants and exhaust cleaning, including operator error. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-machinery-breakdown.php
- **Commercial buildings** (Strongly advised): If you own the building: fire and corrosion damage to the structure are expensive in this trade. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-commercial-buildings.php
- **Business legal expenses** (Depends on the business): Helps in disputes with authorities over permit conditions and with customer complaints that go to court. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-legal-expenses.php
- **Group accident insurance** (Depends on the business): Pays on top of statutory accident insurance, for example after serious chemical burns, also off duty. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-group-accident.php

## What it costs: example prices

Premiums depend mainly on the process. Powder coating without tanks is cheaper than hard chrome plating or lines with cyanide baths. Tank volume, turnover, fire protection and industrial customers also count.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business liability | Small powder coater, turnover up to €500,000, €3 million limit including processing damage | about €900 to €2,500 a year |
| Business liability | Plating shop with environmental and extended product liability, 20 staff | about €4,000 to €12,000 a year |
| Business contents | Plant, tanks and customer goods worth €800,000 | about €1,500 to €4,000 a year |
| Business interruption | Twelve months business interruption, combined with contents cover | about €800 to €2,500 a year |
| Machinery breakdown | Rectifiers, oven and powder plant with €400,000 replacement value | about €1,500 to €3,500 a year |

For comparison: Environmental liability for a small plating shop costs about as much a year as making up one fresh bath for a line.

_Guide figures from our own quoting work, excluding German insurance premium tax, October 2026. Shops with large tanks or cyanide processes are often higher, and some insurers only quote after a site visit. The sources below support the legal statements._

## The worst day in a plating shop

## Practical tips from your broker

- List every tank, storage vessel and the waste water treatment in your environmental liability; unlisted installations are often not covered.
- Add processing damage to customer parts and set the limit by the value of your largest batch.
- Consider separate environmental damage cover for soil and water clean up ordered by the authorities.
- If you supply the car industry, include extended product liability with removal and refitting costs.
- Tell the insurer about spark detection and extinguishing systems in your extraction; it often affects the premium.
- Set the business interruption indemnity period with the delivery time for rectifiers, ovens and booths in mind.

## FAQ

### Does a plating shop in Germany need environmental liability insurance?

Yes, as soon as you run baths, acids or alkalis. Under § 89 of the Water Resources Act you are liable for substances escaping from your plant into water even without fault.

### What does insurance for a powder coating shop cost?

Small shops usually pay about €2,000 to €5,000 a year for liability and contents. That is a guide figure from our quoting work; turnover and fire protection decide the final price.

### When does a plating plant need an emission control permit?

Under Annex 1 No. 3.10 of the 4th BImSchV for electrolytic or chemical surface treatment with process tanks of 30 m³ or more. Pickling with hydrofluoric or nitric acid needs a permit from 1 m³.

### Are customer parts I damage covered?

Only if processing damage is included. Redoing your own coating is never insured.

### Do I need a master craftsman certificate to open a plating shop?

No. Electroplating is listed in Annex B of the Crafts Code as a licence free craft.

### Why are some insurers reluctant to cover plating shops?

Because of the combination of environmental risk, fire load and expensive customer goods. As a broker we approach insurers that write this trade.
