## Do I have to pay if a child falls off a slide while the parents are watching?

Only if you did something wrong, for example left a damaged item open or failed to display the house rules. You still have to defend the claim, and that is exactly what public liability insurance does: it checks the claim, rejects unjustified demands and pays justified ones. Written records of maintenance and daily checks make this much easier.

## At a glance

- **Compulsory:** No specific statutory insurance for the business itself. Your employees are covered by statutory accident insurance under § 2 of Social Code Book VII, your young visitors are not
- **Biggest risk:** A child is injured on equipment, and the parents claim poor maintenance or supervision
- **Basic cover from:** about €600 a year of public liability for a small hall, a guide figure from our own quoting work
- **Most expensive loss:** Fire or water damage in the hall, followed by weeks of closure
- **Often forgotten:** Trampolines, bouncy castles and birthday parties must be named in the policy

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Falls from equipment:** A child falls inside the climbing frame and breaks an arm. The health insurer reclaims treatment costs, the parents ask for compensation.
- **Trampoline collisions:** Two children land on the same bed. Insurers treat trampolines as a separate risk, and not every policy includes them.
- **Fire in the hall:** Foam, nets and padding burn quickly. After a fire the equipment is lost and the hall closed for weeks.
- **Water damage:** A burst pipe soaks the ball pit and the soft play mats, which then have to be replaced.
- **Break-ins:** Thieves take the till, arcade machines and electronics overnight.
- **Winter closure:** Most revenue comes in the cold months. Losing the hall then costs a year's profit.

## What it costs: example prices

Premiums depend on floor space, visitor numbers, type of equipment and whether trampolines and catering are part of the business. Trampoline parks cost considerably more in liability than classic soft play.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business liability | Small indoor playground up to 1,000 m² with café | about €600 to €1,200 a year |
| Business liability | Large hall with trampoline courts and birthday parties | about €2,000 to €5,000 a year |
| Business contents | Equipment and fittings worth €250,000 | about €700 to €1,500 a year |
| Business interruption | Loss of income up to twelve months, €400,000 turnover | about €400 to €900 a year |

For comparison: Public liability for a small soft play hall costs about as much a year as the admissions of one busy rainy Sunday.

Contents insurance replaces equipment and fittings, business interruption cover pays lost profit and running costs until the end of the indemnity period.
