# Insurance for self employed care advisors in Germany

> Care advisors in Germany visit families at home, often at difficult moments. You explain long term care insurance benefits, write care plans and carry out the advice visits that people receiving care allowance must have regularly. Wrong advice can cost money, and a home visit can cause damage. Whether you are self employed or run a recognised advice centre, this page shows what should be insured and what it costs.

## Who pays if a family files an application too late because of my advice?

If they lose benefits as a result, that is pure financial loss. Only professional indemnity covers it, not standard public liability. Record your advice in writing; it helps in any dispute and is usual for advice visits anyway.

## At a glance

- **Advice visits:** People receiving care allowance (Pflegegeld) must book an advice visit every six months under § 37(3) SGB XI; recognised neutral and independent advice centres are among those allowed to carry them out
- **Biggest risk:** An advice error that makes a family lose or delay long term care benefits
- **Basic cover from:** about €200 a year for liability including financial loss for a sole advisor, a guide figure from our own quoting work
- **Clients:** Under § 7a SGB XI, long term care funds may hand their advice tasks wholly or partly to third parties
- **Often forgotten:** Financial loss from advice, which standard public liability usually does not cover

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Wrong advice:** A missed deadline, an overlooked entitlement, an appeal recommended too late: the family loses benefits and claims compensation.
- **Damage on home visits:** A vase knocked over, a hearing aid dropped, a care aid adjusted wrongly: you work in other people's homes.
- **Always on the road:** Advice visits mean daily drives, often in rural areas. An accident costs the car and working days.
- **Health data:** Diagnoses, care levels and family details sit on laptop and phone. Loss or an attack triggers reporting duties.
- **Losing your own capacity to work:** As a sole advisor there is no cover for you. If you fall ill, you earn nothing.
- **Fee disputes:** Billing with care funds and contracts with clients sometimes lead to disputes.

## What it costs: example prices

Care advice carries little property risk. What matters is financial loss, the car and your own ability to work.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Professional indemnity | Sole advisor, financial loss up to €250,000, with liability for injury and damage | about €200 to €500 a year |
| Professional indemnity | Advice centre with five advisors, financial loss up to €500,000 | about €600 to €1,500 a year |
| Car insurance | Compact car, 25,000 km a year for work, liability and partial cover | about €500 to €1,100 a year |
| Cyber insurance | Advice centre with digital records | about €300 to €800 a year |
| Business legal expenses | Self employed advisor with contract and traffic legal expenses | about €250 to €600 a year |

For comparison: Professional indemnity for a self employed care advisor costs about as much a year as two tanks of fuel for home visits.

_All figures are guide figures from our own quoting work, excluding German insurance premium tax, as of October 2026. Your premium depends on activities, number of advisors and limits chosen._

- Make sure financial loss from advice is included; standard public liability is not enough.
- Record every advice session in writing, with date, content and recommended steps.
- Tell your motor insurer that you use the car for work and drive a lot.
- Store health data encrypted and protect laptop and phone with passwords.
- Check contracts with care funds or clients for the insurance and limits they require.
- Protect your ability to work if you work alone with no one to cover for you.

Among others, approved care services, neutral and independent advice centres recognised by the state associations of the care funds, and care advisors under § 7a SGB XI.
