# Insurance for registered pension advisers in Germany

> In Germany, a pension adviser (Rentenberater) is a registered legal service provider. Registered pension advisers advise on the statutory pension, accident insurance, disability law linked to a pension and company and professional pension schemes, and may represent clients up to the Higher Social Court. One missed deadline can cost a client part of their pension for life. This page explains the rules, the cover that matters and what it costs.

## Is the minimum of 250,000 euros enough for my practice?

It is enough for registration. If you advise employers on company pensions, one error can affect many employees at once. In that case consider a higher limit and an annual aggregate that can carry several claims.

## At a glance

- **Registration:** Only persons registered with the Federal Office of Justice may provide pension advice (section 10 RDG)
- **Compulsory insurance:** Professional indemnity of at least 250,000 euros for each claim (section 12 RDG)
- **In court:** Pension advisers may represent clients before the Social Court and the Higher Social Court within their authorisation (section 73 SGG)
- **Basic cover from:** about 350 euros a year for the compulsory minimum of a sole practice, a guide figure from our quoting work
- **Often forgotten:** A pension error has effects for many years, so the limit should carry a client's lifelong loss

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Deadline missed:** An objection to a pension decision is filed too late. The client loses part of the pension every month and claims damages.
- **Application too late:** The pension application is not filed in time and months of payments are lost.
- **Wrong calculation:** Reductions for early retirement are misjudged. The client would have worked longer.
- **Company pension:** An employer follows your advice on its pension rules and an error later affects many employees.
- **Health data:** Files contain medical reports and insurance records. A breach is especially serious.
- **Owner absent:** Small practices depend on one person. If they are off for a long time, deadlines keep running.

**Risk radar** (Compared with other trades, 1 low to 5 high.): Liability 5, Fire and water 2, Theft 2, Cyber 4, Downtime 3, Health 2

## The insurance you need

- **Professional indemnity** (Essential): Financial loss liability is a condition of registration under section 12 RDG and pays when clients lose pension or benefits through your error. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-professional-indemnity.php

- **Business contents** (Strongly advised): Protects furniture, equipment and files against fire, water, burglary and storm. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-contents.php
- **Business legal expenses** (Strongly advised): For disputes with your landlord, staff or suppliers. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-legal-expenses.php

- **Business liability** (Depends on the business): For injury and property damage, for example a client falling in your office. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-liability.php
- **Electronic equipment** (Depends on the business): For laptops, scanners and servers, including operating errors and theft. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-electronic-equipment.php

## What it costs: example prices

Premiums depend on the limit, turnover, number of advisers, areas of work and claims history. Company pension advice is usually rated higher than individual pension applications.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Professional indemnity | Sole practice, compulsory 250,000 euros per claim | about 350 to 900 euros a year |
| Professional indemnity | Practice with three advisers and employer clients, 1 million euros | about 1,200 to 3,000 euros a year |
| Cyber insurance | Office with five workstations, 250,000 euros limit | about 500 to 1,300 euros a year |
| Business contents | Furniture and equipment worth 30,000 euros | about 120 to 300 euros a year |
| Occupational disability | Age 45, office work, 2,000 euros monthly benefit | about 80 to 160 euros a month |

For comparison: The compulsory cover of a sole practice costs less a year than one month of the pension at stake in a typical objection.

_All prices are guide figures from our own quoting work in 2026, excluding German insurance premium tax. The minimum limit comes from section 12 RDG._

## Practical tips from your broker

- Have all registered areas confirmed in the policy, including company and professional pensions and court representation.
- Choose a higher limit if you advise employers, because one error can affect many employees.
- Keep a deadline diary with a second check; missed objection deadlines are the classic error.
- Look at run off cover: the effects of advice often show only when the pension starts, years later.
- Protect health data with encryption and a secure client portal.
- Protect your own income, because the practice depends on your expertise.
