# Insurance for medical supply stores in Germany

> A medical supply store in Germany, a Sanitätshaus, is a shop, a workshop and a delivery service in one. You fit braces and compression stockings, deliver wheelchairs and care beds and set them up in people's homes. Your customers are often already unwell, so mistakes hurt. This page explains which insurance fits and what it costs.

## Who pays if a customer is hurt by a care bed we set up?

If the accident goes back to a mistake in assembly, instruction or fitting, your business is liable. Public liability pays, provided that fitting, assembly at the customer's home and product liability are named in the policy. Make sure work in care homes and private flats is included too.

## At a glance

- **Health insurer approval:** To supply aids to people with statutory health insurance you need a prequalification certificate under § 126 SGB V, valid for up to five years
- **Biggest risk:** Injuries from badly fitted or badly assembled aids, such as a fall with a walker whose brake was set wrongly
- **Basic cover from:** about €250 a year of public liability for a small store, a guide figure from our own quoting work
- **Accident insurance:** Employees are covered by statutory accident insurance under § 2 SGB VII, through the relevant Berufsgenossenschaft (statutory accident insurer)
- **Often forgotten:** Rental equipment in customers' homes, which contents insurance often covers only at your own premises

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Fitting mistakes:** A brace that is too tight, a wheelchair set up wrongly, a stocking that causes pressure sores: these lead to injury claims.
- **Assembly at home:** Care beds, bath lifts and stair aids are installed in customers' homes. One loose bolt can cause a serious fall.
- **Rental fleet:** Wheelchairs and care beds sit in many different homes. Fire, water or theft there hits your property.
- **Workshop and stock:** A fire or burst pipe can destroy tens of thousands of euros' worth of stock and workshop equipment.
- **Health data:** Prescriptions, measurements and diagnoses sit in your software. An attack triggers reporting duties and costs.
- **Disputes with health insurers:** Billing, approvals and contracts with health insurers are daily business. Cuts or claw backs end up with a lawyer.

## What it costs: example prices

Liability is affordable for medical supply stores. Contents, workshop and the vehicles for delivery and home visits cost more.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business liability | One store with fitting and home assembly, up to five employees | about €250 to €700 a year |
| Business contents | Stock, workshop and fittings of €200,000, including burglary | about €500 to €1,300 a year |
| Electronic equipment | Scanners, measuring devices and till system of €40,000 | about €200 to €500 a year |
| Fleet insurance | Three vans and two cars, liability and partial cover | about €3,500 to €7,000 a year |
| Cyber insurance | Store with customer database and electronic billing | about €400 to €1,000 a year |

For comparison: Liability, contents and electronics together cost a small store about as much a year as a well equipped lightweight wheelchair.

_All figures are guide figures from our own quoting work, excluding German insurance premium tax, as of October 2026. Your premium depends on turnover, staff, workshop and claims history._

## Practical tips from your broker

- Have fitting, home assembly and instruction in the use of aids named as insured activities.
- Insure rental equipment outside your premises too, in homes and care homes.
- Check that damage to the customer's home during assembly, for example by drilling, is included.
- Keep an eye on your prequalification certificate: it expires after five years at the latest.
- Agree business interruption cover for workshop machines and scanners, not just for fire.
- Combine vans and field cars in one fleet policy once you run several vehicles.
