# Insurance for pest control businesses in Germany

> You work with poisons in kitchens, warehouses and homes. When something goes wrong, it hits people, pets, food and groundwater: the rat bait a dog eats, the fumigation that ruins a warehouse, the bed bug treatment that leaves the sofa wrecked. This page shows what you must cover and what it costs.

## Who pays if a client's pet eats a bait?

Your public liability policy, if you did not lay the bait securely and poisoning of animals by control agents is included in the policy. Many general tariffs exclude exactly that, which is why you need a tariff designed for pest controllers. Record every bait point with a photo and a note to the client; it often decides the question of liability.

## At a glance

- **Compulsory:** No insurance is required by law. Working with biocides requires proof of competence under the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance (Gefahrstoffverordnung), and fumigation also needs an official permit
- **Biggest risk:** Poisoning of people and pets and environmental damage caused by biocides
- **Basic cover from:** about 300 euros a year for public liability for a small business with environmental cover
- **Statutory accident insurer:** BGW, the Berufsgenossenschaft responsible for pest control; you are compulsorily insured there as the owner too
- **Often forgotten:** Environmental damage insurance: standard liability cover does not fully pay for damage to soil, water and protected species

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Poison in the wrong stomach:** A dog finds the bait box, a child plays in the cellar. Poisoning of animals and people is the typical expensive risk in this trade.
- **Fumigation gone wrong:** After fumigation the grain store can no longer be sold, or gas seeps into neighbouring rooms. The loss hits entire stocks of goods.
- **Contaminated food:** Spray mist in a commercial kitchen or bakery, and the goods have to be destroyed. The client often has to close for a while as well.
- **Damage to furniture and walls:** Heat treatment for bed bugs warps furniture, drill holes for bait damage tiles. This is damage to the client's property caused by your work.
- **Soil and water:** Spilled products get into the ground or the drains. Clean up and official orders quickly cost six figures.
- **Stings, fumes and tight spaces:** Wasp nests on a ladder, work in crawl spaces, handling poisons: the health risk for you and your staff is high.

**Risk radar** (Compared with other trades, 1 low to 5 high.): Liability 5, Fire and water 2, Theft 2, Cyber 2, Downtime 2, Health 4

## The insurance you need

- **Business liability** (Essential): Covers poisoning of people and animals, damage to treated property and, with environmental cover, soil and water too. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-business-liability.php
- **Car insurance** (Strongly advised): Your service vehicle carries hazardous substances; the insurer must know this so that it pays in full after a claim. https://www.nammert.com/en/insurance-broker-car-insurance.php

## What it costs: example prices

Insurers rate pest control as a higher risk. What matters is turnover, number of employees, whether you fumigate and whether food businesses are among your clients.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business liability | Small business, about 100,000 euros turnover, 3 million euros cover | about 300 to 600 euros a year |
| Business liability | Business with five employees, environmental damage cover and food industry clients | about 800 to 2,000 euros a year |
| Business liability | Including fumigation and timber treatment, 5 million euros cover | about 1,500 to 3,500 euros a year |
| Business contents | Store, spraying gear and heat equipment worth 40,000 euros | about 180 to 450 euros a year |
| Accident insurance | Owner, 150,000 euros base sum with progression | about 200 to 450 euros a year |

For comparison: Public liability for a small pest control business costs roughly as much per year as two bed bug treatments in a flat.

The small business example matches publicly quoted tariffs from a specialist scheme; larger businesses, contents and accident cover are our estimates from quoting experience. ## The worst day in pest control

Six things that really happen to pest controllers, all on one single Thursday. Tap through the day and see who pays.

- 09:45: After a spray treatment in a commercial kitchen, food inspectors find residues. Food destroyed, kitchen closed for two days. (€22,000, Paid by: Business liability)
- 12:10: Heat treatment for bed bugs warps the parquet and a built in wardrobe in a period flat. (€9,000, Paid by: Business liability)
- 14:30: On the way to a client a canister tips over in the van; product runs onto the car park and into a drain. Clean up by a specialist firm. (€18,000, Paid by: Business liability)
- 16:15: Removing a wasp nest, you fall off the ladder. Fractured vertebra, three months off work. (€25,000, Paid by: Accident insurance)
- 23:00: Break-in at the store: heat equipment and spraying gear are gone. (€14,000, Paid by: Business contents)

**Damage so far:** €92,200

## Practical tips from your broker

- Choose a tariff for pest controllers in which poisoning of people and animals by control agents is expressly covered.
- Include environmental liability and environmental damage insurance, with a separate limit for groundwater and soil.
- Include damage to treated property and fumigated rooms if you use heat or gas.
- Check product and recall costs if you work in the food industry; some clients require this in the contract.
- Match your insured earnings with the BGW to your actual income, otherwise the injury benefit will be too low.
- Document every job with product, quantity, location and the note given to the client. After a claim, this is your most important evidence.

## FAQ

### Is liability insurance compulsory for pest controllers in Germany?

Not by law. Large clients such as food businesses, hospitals and housing companies almost always require it, often with environmental cover.

### What does public liability for a pest controller cost?

For small businesses it starts at about 300 euros a year. With environmental damage, food industry clients and staff you are usually between 800 and 2,000 euros.

### Does liability insurance cover environmental damage?

Environmental liability pays when third parties are harmed. For the clean up duties imposed by public law on soil, water and protected species, you also need environmental damage insurance.

### Am I insured with the Berufsgenossenschaft as the owner?

Yes. In pest control, business owners are also compulsorily insured with the BGW. Check that the insured sum matches your income.

### Who pays if the infestation comes back after treatment?

That is not a liability claim but a warranty question. You carry the cost of follow up treatment yourself; legal expenses cover helps if the client refuses to pay because of it.

### Do I have to report that I carry products?

Tell your motor insurer that you transport hazardous substances. Small quantities benefit from exemptions under the dangerous goods rules, but the load must still be secured.
