# Insurance for cable cars, chairlifts and ski lifts in Germany

> Whether a gondola in the Alps, a chairlift in the Allgäu or a club run ski lift in the uplands: cable cars carry people above steep ground, in winter and summer. A broken rope, a gearbox failure or an injured passenger can cost a whole season. This page shows which insurance operators in Germany need and what matters most.

## Does my insurance pay if there is no snow?

Standard business interruption cover does not: it only pays when insured physical damage stops the lift, such as a gearbox failure or a fire in the station. Weather solutions for lack of snow exist, with fixed measuring points and thresholds, but they are rare and mostly for larger operators. For most lifts it matters more that machinery breakdown and loss of income after a technical failure are properly covered.

## At a glance

- **Supervision:** The main inspections are prescribed and monitored by the supervisory authority; every year the operations manager and a recognised external expert inspect the whole installation, including ropes and brakes
- **Biggest risk:** Injury to passengers, when boarding and leaving, during an evacuation or at the valley station
- **Basic cover from:** around €800 a year liability for a small ski lift, a guide figure from our quoting work
- **Machinery:** Drive, gearbox, rope and control system are the most expensive parts; machinery breakdown is not covered by fire insurance
- **Often forgotten:** Loss of income when the lift stands still after physical damage in the middle of the season

## What goes wrong in this trade

- **Injured passengers:** A child slips off the chair, a skier falls when getting off, a hiker gets caught in a cabin door.
- **Stoppage and evacuation:** If the lift stops, passengers must be rescued from the air. Hypothermia, panic and claims follow.
- **Machinery breakdown:** Gearbox, drive motor or rope fail. Spare parts often come only from the manufacturer, with long lead times.
- **Natural hazards:** Storm, avalanches, debris flows, lightning and hail hit towers, stations and controls.
- **Downtime in peak season:** Every week of stoppage in February is missing from annual revenue while staff and loans continue.
- **Piste machines and staff:** Snow groomers, snowmobiles and work on the slope are dangerous for staff and guests.

**Risk radar** (Compared with other trades, 1 low to 5 high.): Liability 5, Fire and water 4, Theft 2, Cyber 2, Downtime 5, Health 4

## What it costs: example prices

Cable cars are rated individually. Type of installation, capacity, age of the technology, sums insured and claims history set the premium. A club ski lift costs a fraction of a gondola.

| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business liability | Small ski lift in the uplands, club run, winter only | around €800 to €2,500 a year |
| Business liability | Chairlift with summer operation and catering, €10 million cover | around €6,000 to €20,000 a year |
| Machinery breakdown | Drive, gearbox and rope of a chairlift | individual, often from around €5,000 a year |
| Commercial buildings | Valley and mountain station with garage, replacement value €4 million | around €4,000 to €12,000 a year |
| Car insurance | Snow groomer, liability and comprehensive | around €1,500 to €4,000 a year |

For comparison: For cable cars we compare liability sum, machinery cover including rope and gearbox, the indemnity period for loss of income and exclusions for natural hazards.

## Practical tips from your broker

- Choose a high liability sum; a serious accident with several passengers can cost millions.
- Have the rope explicitly included in machinery cover and clarify how wear is deducted.
- Match the indemnity period for loss of income to spare part lead times, often several months.
- Keep inspection reports and maintenance records to hand; insurers will ask for them.
- Check whether avalanches, debris flows and landslides are covered for buildings and machinery.
- Remember summer operation with hikers, mountain bikers and toboggan runs; it must be in the liability policy.

## FAQ

### Which insurance does a cable car operator need?

Essential are public liability with a high sum and machinery insurance for drive, gearbox and rope. Add buildings, loss of income and the vehicles for the piste service.

### How often is a cable car inspected?

According to the Association of German Cable Cars, daily before opening by the operator and every year in two main inspections, one by the operations manager and one by a recognised external expert. The supervisory authority prescribes and monitors them.

### What does insurance for a ski lift cost?

From our quoting work, liability for a small club lift starts at around €800 a year. Chairlifts and gondolas are rated individually and cost much more.

### Is lack of snow insured?

Not through standard business interruption cover, which requires physical damage. Weather solutions for lack of snow are only offered occasionally.

### Are volunteers in a club insured?

Volunteers should be named in the liability policy. Group accident insurance protects them against their own injuries.
