# Golf insurance in Germany: liability, equipment and the hole-in-one round

> A sliced drive can hit a playing partner, a car in the club car park or a window next to the course, and you are personally liable for the damage. Since 2022, adult members of German golf clubs are no longer insured automatically through the national federation. That makes your own personal liability policy the first thing to check. Golf insurance adds cover for your equipment and the hole-in-one tradition.

## Do I need golf insurance to play in Germany?

There is no legal requirement. The key protection is a German personal liability policy (Privathaftpflicht) that includes golf without restrictions. Check the terms, because some contracts exclude damage caused by stray balls. Separate golf insurance is mainly worth it for valuable equipment, broken clubs and theft, and for the hole-in-one round, which no liability policy pays.

## At a glance

- **Mandatory?:** No, there is no legal insurance requirement for golfers
- **Federation cover:** no longer automatic for adult club members since 2022
- **DGV-GolfProtect:** HanseMerkur, secondary to personal liability, EUR 5 million (2023 terms)
- **Equipment:** clubs, bag and trolley against theft and breakage, depending on the policy
- **Hole-in-one:** drinks in the clubhouse, usually capped at a few hundred to EUR 1,000

## Start with personal liability: it carries the big risk

If your ball injures someone, the claim quickly covers medical costs, compensation for pain and suffering and lost earnings. Liability insurance pays this, and in many cases the personal liability policy you already have is enough. It must include golf without exclusions, including damage from stray balls. If the terms are silent, ask the insurer to confirm in writing.

Choose a sum insured of several million euros. Personal injury is the expensive case, and a ball hitting someone's head at close range can have lasting consequences.

## The 2022 change at the German Golf Federation

Until the end of 2021, every member of a club in the Deutscher Golf Verband (DGV) was automatically covered for liability while playing. Since 1 January 2022 this only applies to minors, taster courses and trial members. Adults have to arrange their own cover.

The federation created DGV-GolfProtect with HanseMerkur to close the gap. Members join by giving HanseMerkur marketing consent or paying a small fee. According to the 2023 summary, it covers EUR 5 million with a EUR 250 deductible and only pays after your own personal liability policy.

## Equipment: why household contents insurance often falls short

German household contents insurance (Hausrat) mainly protects belongings at home. Outside the home, in the car or in the clubhouse, limits are tighter and simple theft is often not covered. A golf bag in the boot is a classic gap.

Golf equipment insurance covers clubs, bag, trolley and, depending on the policy, a GPS watch or electric trolley against theft, burglary, fire and breakage. Insure at replacement value. Losing or leaving items behind is almost always excluded.

## Golf carts: a question for motor cover and the club

German personal liability policies generally exclude the use of vehicles. Whether a golf cart counts depends on the vehicle and the policy wording. If you own a cart or drive it beyond the course, clarify this first.

For rented carts, ask the club office how the vehicle is insured and who pays for damage to the cart itself.

## What is covered

- Injury and property damage to others caused by ball or club
- Defence against unjustified claims
- Damage to other people's cars and buildings next to the course
- Theft and burglary of equipment, if agreed
- Club breakage during play, if agreed
- Hole-in-one round up to the agreed limit
- Golf trips abroad, depending on territorial scope

## What is not covered

- Losing or leaving equipment behind
- Wear and tear, such as worn grips and club faces
- Golf cart accidents under personal liability, depending on the policy
- Your own injuries, which need accident insurance
- Professional work as a golf teacher or tour player
- Hole-in-one costs above the agreed maximum

## Who needs it

- Adult club members without a personal liability policy that clearly includes golf
- Golfers with equipment that would hurt to replace
- Anyone who often leaves the bag in the car or flies with it
- Competition players who want the hole-in-one round covered

## Who does not need it

- Separate golf liability, if your personal liability policy covers golf without exclusions and with a high sum insured

## What it costs

Golf cover is usually inexpensive. The liability part is often already included in personal liability, while the equipment premium depends on the value of clubs, bag and trolley.

**What drives the premium:**

- Sum insured for equipment at replacement value
- Modules: liability, equipment, club breakage, hole-in-one
- Theft from the car included or not
- Territory: Germany, Europe or worldwide
- Deductible

_We do not quote ranges, because golf policies are put together very differently and reliable comparison figures are lacking. Your premium is only fixed in the quote._

## The policy levels on the market

- **Golf within personal liability:** Damage to others from ball and club, with your personal liability sum insured. No equipment, no hole-in-one round.
- **Golf package:** Golf liability plus equipment against theft and breakage, and the hole-in-one round up to a limit.
- **Golf package with travel cover:** Adds worldwide scope, theft from the car and replacement equipment if the bag goes missing on a flight.

## How to recognise a good policy

| Criterion | Minimum standard | Strong policy | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Golf in liability cover | golf included as a sport | stray balls named explicitly, no restrictions | Some contracts exclude exactly the typical golf claim. |
| Sum insured | EUR 5 million | EUR 10 million combined | A head injury can cause costs for the rest of a life. |
| Equipment | clubs and bag at current value | all items including trolley and GPS watch at replacement value | A full new set of clubs costs more than most people expect. |
| Theft from the car | not covered | included, also when travelling | This is where household contents insurance often has a gap. |
| Club breakage | not covered | breakage during play included | Without it, equipment cover only pays for theft, burglary or fire. |
| Hole-in-one | not covered | up to EUR 1,000, also outside official competitions | Many policies only pay at official competitions and only a few hundred euros. |
| Territory | Germany | worldwide | If you travel to play, you need the cover there too. |

## Insurers on the German market

Golfers in Germany are covered through the personal liability policies of large property insurers, through the DGV federation scheme and through travel and baggage insurers. Specialist intermediaries also sell dedicated golf policies. This list is a market overview.

- **HanseMerkur**: insurer behind the DGV-GolfProtect scheme of the German Golf Federation
- **ERGO Travel Insurance**: travel baggage cover including sports equipment such as golf bags, part of Munich Re
- **Allianz**: personal liability and household contents, agents and brokers
- **AXA**: personal liability and household contents, agents and brokers
- **VHV**: broker-focused insurer with a liability focus
- **Haftpflichtkasse**: mutual specialising in liability, sold through brokers
- **HDI**: part of the Talanx group, private and business customers

163 insurers supervised by BaFin, the German regulator, are licensed for this class of insurance. (Allgemeine Haftpflicht, Hagel-, Frost- und sonstige Sachschäden). Source: BaFin company database, 2026-09-18; EU insurers without a German office excluded.

## Typical claims and who pays

- **Ball hits a playing partner** (treatment, pain and suffering, lost earnings): This is the core of every golf liability cover, provided your contract does not exclude golf or stray balls.
- **Ball smashes a windscreen** (glass and fitting for someone else's car): Liability also pays property damage to others. Cars parked next to the course make this a realistic case.
- **Shaft snaps on the tee** (price of a new club): Liability never pays for your own equipment. Only an agreed club breakage module replaces the club.
- **Bag stolen from the car boot** (full set of clubs plus bag): Household contents insurance often refuses here. Strong golf policies include theft from a car, usually with conditions and a deductible.
- **Hole-in-one at the club event** (a round for everyone in the clubhouse): The policy pays up to the agreed limit. Anything above it stays with the lucky player.
- **Club left behind in the bar** (price of a new club): Losing or leaving items behind is almost always excluded from equipment cover. Theft is insured, forgetfulness is not.

## Myth or truth

- „As a German golf club member I am automatically insured through the federation." ✘ Not as an adult. Since 1 January 2022, automatic DGV cover only applies to minors, taster courses and trial members.
- „DGV-GolfProtect only pays when my own personal liability does not." ✔ Correct. The federation scheme is secondary. If you have personal liability that includes golf, the claim goes there first.
- „Every personal liability policy pays if my ball hits someone." ✘ Not every one. Some contracts exclude damage caused by stray golf balls. The terms or a written query settle it.
- „If my golf bag is stolen from the car, household contents insurance often does not pay." ✔ True. Hausrat mainly protects items at home. Outside the home the limits are tight, and simple theft is often not covered.
- „Hole-in-one insurance pays the whole round, however big it gets." ✘ No. Every policy has a limit, often a few hundred euros, and some only pay at official competitions.

## Common mistakes

- Relying on federation cover that adults have not had automatically since 2022
- Not checking the personal liability policy for golf ball exclusions
- Leaving the bag in the car overnight and trusting household contents insurance
- Not raising the equipment sum insured after buying new clubs
- Not checking the territorial scope before a golf trip

## FAQ

### Is my personal liability policy enough for golf in Germany?

Often yes, if golf is included without restrictions and the sum insured is several million euros. Some contracts exclude damage from stray balls. If in doubt, ask for written confirmation that golf is covered.

### Am I insured through my golf club?

As an adult, not automatically since 2022. Federation cover through the DGV now only applies to minors, taster courses and trial members. Adults can join DGV-GolfProtect, which only pays after their own personal liability policy.

### What does hole-in-one insurance pay?

The drinks traditionally bought in the clubhouse after an ace, up to a limit. Published policies name a few hundred euros up to EUR 1,000. Cover often applies only at official competitions and with confirmation from the club.

### Are my clubs insured in the car?

Under household contents insurance usually only partly or not at all, because it mainly protects items at home. Golf equipment insurance can include theft from a car, often with conditions such as a locked boot.

### Does golf insurance pay if my club breaks?

Only if club breakage is an agreed module. Wear and tear does not count, a sudden break during a shot does.

### Who pays if I have an accident in a golf cart?

That depends on the vehicle and the contract. German personal liability policies generally exclude the use of vehicles. For a rented cart, ask the club how it is insured.

### Do I have to play on a particular course for cover to apply?

With some golf policies, yes: they only pay if the damage happened on an approved golf course. If you practise on an open field, check the terms first.

### Can I get a policy if I have just moved to Germany?

Yes. Personal liability and golf policies are available to residents regardless of nationality. Many contracts and claim forms are only in German, so ask for help reading the exclusions.
