Ten, sixty and a hundred years
Three anniversaries in one issue, and taken together they describe German boatbuilding rather well.
Boatyards NAMMERT Assekuradeur GmbH
YYachts turns ten. The yard was founded in 2016 because its founder wanted to buy a yacht that did not exist: around 80 feet, light, easy to sail with a small crew. More than 50 carbon yachts have been built since, and with the first hybrid powered Y8 a new chapter is starting there.
Gade Boote in Aachen turns sixty. In 1966 the business was among the pioneers of glass reinforced plastic boatbuilding. Today four people build the five metre Lis dinghy there, by hand, in the hand lay up process. It is one of the boats on which generations in Germany learned to sail.
And Secumar of Holm near Hamburg turns a hundred. The company started in 1926 with diving helmets. The brand name came later, out of securitas and in mare. Today around 100,000 lifejackets a year leave the works, and the company is run by the fourth generation.
Three very different businesses share one trait. None of them grew by leaving behind the thing it started with. That is a quieter story than consolidation, and in this trade a more typical one.
What this means for owners
Between a carbon yacht worth several million and a dinghy worth a few thousand euro lies a technical world. In insurance terms they sit closer together than you would think. For both, the cost of salvage and wreck removal follows the effort of getting the boat out of the water, not the value of the boat. That is worth knowing before a liability sum is chosen.
