Third-party liability

Compulsory in some waters, demanded in nearly all of them

There is no single European rule. Germany has no general requirement for pleasure craft, Spain, Croatia and Italy do, and almost every marina asks for a certificate regardless. The practical question is not whether you need one, but whether the one you hold is accepted where you berth.

What the popular cruising countries require

Checked at the slipway and in the harbour office, not at the point of sale.

Germany No general requirement for pleasure craft; some waterways and most marinas ask for it. Certificate issued the same day
Spain Compulsory; the minimum depends on boat class and zone. We issue the sum your marina requires
Italy Compulsory: €6,450,000 for personal injury, €1,300,000 for property damage. Every tariff is well above it
Croatia Compulsory; proof checked in harbour and at the slipway. Certificate in ten languages
Netherlands, Scandinavia No general requirement, but berths and locks routinely ask. Included from the Basis tariff

Figures follow each country’s national rule; check the current version before you sail. Where a minimum depends on boat class or zone, we issue the certificate with the sum your marina asks for.

Six things the cover has to carry

Personal injury and property damage

Up to the agreed sum, €50m in Premium, far above the minimums of the Mediterranean states.

Environmental damage

Spilt fuel and clean-up ordered by an authority. Over protected seagrass the bill climbs quickly.

Whoever is at the helm

Cover attaches to the vessel: any authorised person holding the licence required for those waters, with no crew list.

People being towed

Waterskiing and wakeboarding claims must be included, or the person steering is personally liable.

Tender and trailer

Included at no extra premium, with their own outboard and while uncoupled ashore.

Damage to hired property

A dented pontoon or a damaged finger berth, included from Basis-Plus. It is the commonest claim in a visitors’ harbour.

The line to read twice

A headline sum is not a per-person sum

Many wordings advertise a large overall limit and then cap what any single injured person can receive. In a serious personal-injury claim that sub-limit is what you actually have, not the number on the front page.

Ours carries no sub-limit per person: the agreed sum, €10m, €25m or €50m depending on the tariff; is available for one claimant as much as for twenty.

The three questions you actually have

Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.

“Will they actually pay?”

We are an Assekuradeur; a managing general agent that underwrites and settles claims under its own authority. Our own claims department, appointed surveyors, more than 2,000 partner yards. Cover checked within 24 hours, release or a survey appointment within 48. We settle directly with the yard; you pay the deductible and nothing else.

“Who picks up the phone?”

A family firm since 1989, now in its second generation, with three of its own offices: Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre, no franchise. You get a named contact from the first hour; and after office hours, a number somebody answers.

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English Our terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice exist in German, and the German wording is the binding one. We will not pretend otherwise. What we do: send you the product information documents translated, and walk you through the cover on the phone in English before you sign anything. The full cover, clause by clause, is written out in English on our detail page. Ask us for the documents and we send them the same working day. Any translation we provide is a courtesy translation; in case of doubt the German version prevails. Read the cover in full Request the documents
