Catamaran insurance

Two hulls, one wrong number

A catamaran costs far more new than a monohull of the same length. Insure it by length and it is underinsured from the first day, which nobody notices until the boat is a total loss or the yard sends an estimate for one hull.

In short

How should a catamaran be insured?

On value, not on length: the agreed value follows the replacement cost including equipment. Liability starts at around 39 euros a year, both drives belong in the machinery cover, and salvage and craning are included in every hull tariff, which matters when no standard travel lift takes the beam.

Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.

Where a catamaran differs

Everything a monohull policy covers applies here too. These are the points that only arise with two hulls.

Sum insured ValueReplacement cost including equipment, never a length based table.
Two engines MachineryBoth saildrives or shafts belong in the machinery cover, which is available from Basis-Plus.
Two rudders FullGrounding damage is regularly twice the bill of a monohull.
Beam BerthDecides berth cost, lift out and salvage. Tell us the beam, not only the length.
Craning All tariffsIncluded in partial and full cover, including a special or floating crane where no travel lift fits.
Bridgedeck damage FullSlamming damage between the hulls from a sudden event, not from age.
Chartering OptionalCommercial charter can be included, skippered or bareboat, agreed in advance.
Salvage On topPaid in addition to the settlement, up to 2.5 million euros.

Six points before you sign

Each of them has cost a catamaran owner real money.

Length is the wrong yardstick

A 45 foot cat can cost twice a 45 foot monohull. Any quote based on length alone will be short in a total loss.

Both drives in the cover

Machinery cover for material, design and handling faults applies to both installations, not to one nominated engine.

Beam decides the lift

If no standard travel lift takes the beam, a special or floating crane is needed. That cost is inside every hull tariff here.

Salvage on top

Up to 2.5 million euros, paid in addition to the settlement. Deducted, there would be nothing left to repair with.

Charter can be included

Skippered or bareboat, agreed before the first booking. Chartering without that note is the classic reason a claim is declined.

Agreed value

Set in writing before anything happens and adjustable after a refit, in Premium without an upper limit.

Plainly said

One hull damaged is not half a claim

Owners expect a repair on one hull to cost half of a monohull repair. It rarely does. The structure runs through the bridgedeck, the yard has to support both hulls to work on one, and the boat blocks a wide berth for the whole time.

That is why the agreed value and the salvage limit matter more here than on any other type. Both are figures you can read in the policy before you need them.

The three questions you actually have

Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.

“Will they actually pay?”

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English Our terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice exist in German, and the German wording is the binding one. We will not pretend otherwise. What we do: send you the product information documents translated, and walk you through the cover on the phone in English before you sign anything. The full cover, clause by clause, is written out in English on our detail page. Ask us for the documents and we send them the same working day.
