Sailboat insurance
One gust early, one reef late
A sailing boat is rated on sail area, not on engine power. What decides a claim is rarely the hull: it is the rig, the sails and the question of whether the damage came from weather or from a decision taken too late.
In short
What does sailboat insurance cost?
Liability starts at around 39 euros a year, partial hull cover at 199 euros, rated on sail area. Rig, mast and sails sit under full cover, club regattas are included from Basis-Plus, and gross negligence is covered up to 50 per cent of the sum insured.
Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.
Partial cover and full cover
Partial covers what happens to the boat with nobody aboard. Full adds what happens under sail.
The clauses that decide a claim
Worth reading in any quote, not only in ours.
Rig and mast in full cover
Standing and running rigging are insured, including the rig check the yard bills after a dismasting.
Sails from a sudden event
A blown out sail is covered when a squall did it, not when twelve seasons of sun did. Keep the invoices.
Club regattas from Basis-Plus
Racing in your club calendar is inside cover. Offshore and championship series are written separately.
Grounding and salvage
Salvage and wreck removal are paid on top of the settlement, not out of it, up to 2.5 million euros.
Gross negligence to 50 per cent
Waived up to 25 per cent of the sum insured from Basis-Plus and 50 per cent in Premium. A percentage, not a fixed cap.
Craning and winter storage
Included in partial and full cover, in a foreign yard as well. The marina insures its buildings, not your boat.
Plainly said
Sail area, not length
Two boats of the same length can carry very different rigs, and the rig is what generates the loads. Sail area is therefore the honest rating factor, and it is also the number most owners have to look up rather than guess.
Take it from the sail plan or the measurement certificate, main and foretriangle. If a code sail or a bowsprit was added later, say so: it changes the figure and the loads with it.

Sail area, year of build, sum insured and berth. A recent survey helps but is not required below 25 years of age.

The three questions you actually have
Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.
“Will they actually pay?”
We are an Assekuradeur; a managing general agent that underwrites and settles claims under its own authority. Our own claims department, appointed surveyors, more than 2,000 partner yards. Cover checked within 24 hours, release or a survey appointment within 48. We settle directly with the yard; you pay the deductible and nothing else.
What happens in the first 48 hours →“Who picks up the phone?”
A family firm since 1989, now in its second generation, with three of its own offices: Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre, no franchise. You get a named contact from the first hour; and after office hours, a number somebody answers.
