Boat insurance for international owners

We are a German underwriting agency on the water since 1989. If you are reading this in English, the first thing you probably want to know is whether we can insure you at all. Here is the rule, before anything else.

Who we can insure

One of these two is enough; you do not need both.

You live in Germany, Austria or Spain

Whatever flag your boat flies. A British owner in Munich, a Dutch couple in Vienna, both qualify.

Your boat flies a German, Austrian or Spanish flag

Wherever you live. A German-flagged boat with an owner in the UK or Portugal qualifies.

If neither applies; say, an Irish owner in Ireland with an Irish-flagged boat; we cannot write the policy, and we will tell you straight away rather than leaving you waiting.

Who comes to us

Four situations we see most often

Expats with a berth in Germany or Austria

You qualify through residence. Policy, conditions and correspondence come in English, the full wording, not a summary.

Blue water sailors

Worldwide cruising ranges including ocean passages, and no hurricane exclusion in our standard wording.

Buyers of German boats

The seller's policy transfers to you by law. Worth understanding before completion, not after.

Owners berthed in Spain or Croatia

We have our own office in Spain and settle claims there in Spanish, while you deal with us in English.

Getting started

Can I insure with a German insurer? You need one of two things, not both: residence in Germany, Austria or Spain; or a German, Austrian or Spanish flag on the boat. Flag, registration and what they mean for cover The flag decides which law governs your boat at sea; and, together with your residence, whether we can insure it at all. Buying a German boat: what happens to the policy Under § 95 of the German Insurance Contract Act, the seller’s policy passes to you automatically on transfer of ownership; whether you want it or not.

Cover

Cruising range: where your policy actually covers you Most claims that get declined are not declined because of an exclusion.

Claims

Making a claim in English Policy, conditions and correspondence come in English; and the people you write to are the ones who decide, not a department that has never seen your boat.
