Claims

Something happened. Start here.

People first, then limit the damage, then the paperwork. Call us as soon as you can: as an underwriting agent we assess and pay from our own authority, so nobody has to forward your file.

The first five steps

In this order. Everything else can wait.

1 People first Count everyone aboard, lifejackets on, call the emergency number if anyone is hurt. The boat can wait.
2 Limit the damage Stop the ingress, check the bilge pump, secure the boat or get it alongside. What you prevent now nobody has to pay for later; and failing to try is itself a ground for reduction.
3 Photograph before you tidy up Wide shot and detail, with a timestamp. Once the scene is cleared, the sequence of events cannot be shown.
4 Admit nothing Take the other party’s details and photograph their registration, but sign no admission of liability; least of all a document in a language you do not read. The assessment is our job.
5 Call us The sooner the simpler. On the phone we tell you whether a surveyor is needed and which yard in that area does good work.

The usual case

Damage abroad, policy at home

Most serious claims happen where the boat lies, not where the owner lives. You report in English; the correspondence with the marina, the yard and the local authority is ours.

Report in English; we handle the local correspondence in German, Spanish or the local language.

Surveyor appointed by us, in the area where the boat lies.

Direct settlement with the foreign yard; you do not pay up front.

Salvage and wreck removal paid on top of the settlement, not out of it.

International insurance certificate in ten languages, renewed each year.

One request: do not have a full repair carried out before speaking to us; emergency measures are always fine. Damage that has already been fixed cannot be assessed.

Report it

One call is enough.

Have the policy number, the place and a few photographs to hand. We sort out the rest on the phone.

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English Our terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice exist in German, and the German wording is the binding one. We will not pretend otherwise. What we do: send you the product information documents translated, and walk you through the cover on the phone in English before you sign anything. The full cover, clause by clause, is written out in English on our detail page. Ask us for the documents and we send them the same working day. Any translation we provide is a courtesy translation; in case of doubt the German version prevails. Read the cover in full Request the documents
