Boat emergency: how to reach us

Damage to a boat rarely happens during office hours. So the numbers come first: one for working hours, one for evenings and weekends, and one for messages. Below that, what to do in the first hour and which photos matter later.

If anyone is in danger, call 112 first. It works across the EU and in the UK. On the water, send a distress call on VHF channel 16, and if your radio has DSC, raise the alert on channel 70 first. We are not a rescue service. We take over everything that follows for the boat and the claim.

A printable sheet with the distress call script and room for your call sign and MMSI: emergency sheet for on board.

The first hour, in this order

  1. Get people to safety. Everything else comes after that, the boat included.
  2. Stop the damage getting worse. Pump out, plug a leak, adjust lines and fenders, secure the cover. Do this straight away.
  3. Take photos before you clear up. Wide, medium, close. A tidy boat proves nothing, and the state it was in cannot be recreated.
  4. Witnesses and police. Write down names and addresses of witnesses. After a collision, a theft or an injury, call the police or the harbour master and note the reference number.
  5. Let us know. By phone on the numbers above or via WhatsApp. You get a claim number and a named contact. Speak to us before you commission a permanent repair.

Photos and details that matter later

  • The damage from three distances, plus the whole boat and the berth or the spot in the channel.
  • After a grounding, the hull and the drive as well. After a storm, the mooring lines exactly as you found them.
  • Date, time and position, and after a storm the wind strength if you can.
  • Your contract number. If you do not have it to hand, report anyway and send it later.
  • Names and addresses of witnesses, and the police reference if there was one.

To print and to read

If you want to be prepared, put both on board before the season: the emergency sheet with the distress call and contacts, and the damage report form with everything we will ask for later.
