What your boat needs in October

Boat battery over winter: leave it aboard or take it home?

A fully charged battery survives the winter aboard or in the garage, a flat one freezes.

Winter storage ashore: a sailing yacht with its mast stepped on a steel cradle, beside it a boat with the mast down on trestles

Winter storage with the mast up or down: which is better for the rig and the insurance?

Whether the mast stays up over winter or comes down depends mainly on where the boat …

Topic overview

Every boat we insure

Twenty-one types, twenty-one different risks

A jet ski and a blue-water yacht need the same insurer and almost nothing else in common. What changes per type is below, pick yours in the calculator above.

Power

MotorboatMost claims are berth and manoeuvring damage; cover follows the engine rating, not the hull length.
Motor yachtAbove 15 m the machinery is the risk: engine damage, shafts and stern gear are written in.
YachtInsured on an agreed value, so a total loss pays the figure in the policy, not a surveyor’s guess years later.
Sports boatTrailered, dry-stored, driven hard: the policy covers the road, the crane and the water.
Racing boatInsurable; but not while racing unless regatta cover is written in. We write it in.
Fishing boatRods, sonar and downriggers count as equipment, not personal effects, and are covered as such.
Electric boatBattery and drive carry the value: fire, water ingress and cell damage are covered, charging included.
ShipOver 24 m or in commercial use it leaves the sport-boat tariff, placed individually, still by us.

Sail

Sailing boatRated on sail area, not horsepower; rig and standing rigging belong to the hull sum.
Sailing yachtMast, boom and rigging are insured with the hull; a dismasting is a hull claim, not an exclusion.
DinghyCheap to insure and easy to forget: third-party cover is what clubs and regattas ask to see.
CatamaranTwo hulls, two rudders, twice the berth damage; cover is written per hull, not per boat.
Blue-water yachtOcean passages need the cruising range named in the policy, plus crew and salvage cover.

Small craft and watersports

Jet skiThe highest liability exposure per euro of value, 25 million is the sensible minimum here.
InflatableInsured with the parent boat as her tender, or on its own once it carries its own outboard.
TenderCovered stowed, on the davits, and away from the mother ship under her own power.
E-foil and jetboardNew craft, unsettled rules: liability applies from the first metre, theft included.
SUP, surf and kiteDamage to swimmers and boats is the real risk; equipment theft is an option, not a given.
Rowing boatNo engine, still liability; a collision on a lake is yours to answer for all the same.

Special

HouseboatHalf boat, half home: contents, moorings and permanent-berth risks belong in one policy.
TrailerInsured on the road and standing still; from Basis-Plus in the liability at no extra premium, hull cover for a premium, all under one policy number.

The three questions you actually have

Will they pay, who picks up the phone, and what if you choose wrong.

Before you sign

The price you can work out yourself in a minute. What remains are three questions people rarely put to an insurer out loud. We put them to ourselves here, and answer only with what we can back up.

“Will they actually pay?”

We place cover as an insurance broker, and when something happens we are on your side. You report the claim to us; we arrange the surveyor and one of more than 2,000 partner yards and stay with the case until it is paid. The yard invoices directly, and all you pay is the deductible.

What happens in the first 48 hours →

“Who picks up the phone?”

Family-run since 1989 and now in the second generation, with three offices of our own in Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre in between, no franchise. From the first hour you know your contact by name, and after office hours you reach a number that somebody picks up.

Out of hours: +49 3375 29 28 95 →

“And if I choose wrong?”

If the same cover costs less somewhere else, we pay you the difference. Our comparison puts seven providers side by side on the same criteria, and it names the segments where another provider beats us, as well as the one where we are the most expensive of all.

Policy wording language

Which wording binds, and how we go through it with you in English before you sign.

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English The terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice are written in German, and it is the German text that binds. We do not pretend otherwise. What we do instead: we send you the product information documents in translation and go through the cover with you on the phone, in English, before you sign anything. Clause by clause, the whole cover is set out in English on our detail page. If you ask for the documents, they go out the same working day. Every translation we supply is a courtesy translation; where there is doubt, the German version prevails. Read the cover in full Request the documents
