Paperwork, waiting, hold music

Three steps, then it is just you and the bite

  1. Tell us what is aboard

Engine power and boat value give the calculator its first figure. Mention the sounder, trolling motor and tackle too, so we see the whole picture.

  2. Decide over a coffee

Like the figure? Go ahead online. Rather talk it through first? Get in touch and we walk you through it, no pressure.

  3. Snagged? We will free you.

Report a claim straight to us. We line up surveyor and yard and stay on it until it is settled.

Good to know

Insured with everything on board

A fishing boat is worth less than everything that is bolted to it. Sounder, plotter, trolling motor and a set of rods can outrun the value of the hull, and they are exactly what a standard wording treats as somebody else problem.

What does fishing boat insurance cost?

In short

Liability starts at 49 euros a year, hull cover from Basis-Plus insures the boat at an agreed value. The outboard is covered against theft under full cover if it is locked with a security bolt or kept in a locked building, sounder, plotter and tackle can be insured as equipment, and from Basis-Plus the trailer sits in the liability section at no extra premium once it is named in the application.

Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.

Partial cover and full cover

Partial covers the boat at rest, full adds what happens while fishing.

Storm, hail, lightning PartialAfloat, on the trailer and in winter storage.
Fire and explosion PartialIncluding a battery fire from the trolling motor bank.
Theft of the boat PartialThe hull and fixed equipment, sounder and plotter included when installed.
Sinking at the mooring FullPart of the accident cover from Basis-Plus. Wear and poor maintenance, a tired bilge pump for example, are excluded.
Grounding in shallow water FullLeg and propeller damage in the places fish actually are.
Outboard theft FullIf the engine is locked with a security bolt or similar device, or kept in a locked building.
Loose tackle OptionalRods, reels, lures, landing nets and seats can be insured as watersports equipment, and from Basis-Plus count as personal effects.
Your own mistake FullHandling errors short of intent. Gross negligence is covered by tariff.

Six points before you sign

Each one has cost an angler more than the boat was worth.

Tackle is not household contents

Rods and reels are watersports equipment. Do not rely on a home contents policy for gear aboard; name it in the boat policy.

Outboard theft

Covered under full cover, on the trailer as well as at the mooring, if the engine is locked with a security bolt or kept in a locked building.

Sounder and plotter

Installed electronics are insured with the boat. Handheld units belong in the equipment sum.

Trolling motor batteries

The battery bank is part of the boat and covered against the named perils, fire included. Short circuit damage on its own counts as operating damage and is excluded.

Trailer from Basis-Plus

In the liability section at no extra premium once named in the application, uncoupled and while launching too.

Agreed value

In Premium the agreed value is paid on a total loss at any age, in Basis-Plus up to five years or while the current value still reaches half the sum. Basis pays the current value.

The trailer and the slipway

Plainly said

Many fishing boat claims never happen on the water. They happen at a strange slipway, on an unfamiliar ramp, often single handed: a boat that rolls off, a winch strap that lets go, a car that slides on weed.

That is why launching damage is covered here from Basis-Plus, at home and abroad, and why the trailer belongs in the policy even when the law does not require a certificate for it.

What we need for a quote

Before you buy

Length, engine output, year of build, hull value and roughly what the electronics and tackle aboard are worth.

The three questions you actually have

Before you sign

Not “what does it cost” for your fishing boat; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.

“Will they actually pay?”

As your broker we handle the claim with you, your fishing boat included: one report to us, then we arrange the surveyor and one of more than 2,000 partner yards and follow it through to payment. The yard invoices directly; you pay the deductible and nothing else.

Which language is the policy wording in?

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English Our terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice exist in German, and the German wording is the binding one. We will not pretend otherwise. What we do: send you the product information documents translated, and walk you through the cover for your fishing boat on the phone in English before you sign anything. The full cover for your fishing boat, clause by clause, is written out in English on our detail page. Ask us for the documents and we send them the same working day. Questions and answers

Frequently asked

What does fishing boat insurance cost?

Liability starts at 49 euros a year,

hull cover from Basis-Plus insures the boat at an agreed value.

The outboard is covered against theft under full cover if it is locked with a security bolt or

kept in a locked building, sounder, plotter and tackle can be insured as equipment,

and from Basis-Plus the trailer sits in the liability section at no extra premium once it is named

in the application.

Is fishing tackle covered?

From Basis-Plus, rods, reels and handheld electronics count as personal effects,

up to 3 percent of the sum insured (at least 1,000, at most 3,000 euros, 6,000 in Premium),

while they are stowed on board.

In any tariff they can be insured as watersports equipment with a sum of their own.

Gear left lying in an open boat at the pontoon is a different matter,

and the duties for theft from an unlocked boat are set out in the policy wording.

Are the outboard and the fish finder included in hull cover?

Permanently fitted equipment belongs to the boat, including the sounder,

its transducer and a bow-mounted trolling motor.

The outboard is insured once it is named in the application with its value.

What matters is the declared value:

what was not named in the sum insured does not appear after a loss either.

How high is the deductible for a fishing boat?

For hull cover on a fishing boat you agree 500 or 1,000 euros, nothing more;

there are no hidden extra deductions and no scales by type of loss.

In Basis PLUS and Premium the deductible does not apply to total loss and theft,

in Premium for theft only if the craft was kept locked away or on enclosed premises.

After five claim-free years it is halved there for the first claim;

in Basis the agreed amount always applies.

Are my own handling errors covered on a fishing boat?

With full cover, yes: grounding, collision and handling errors with a fishing boat are claims.

Even in cases of gross negligence the insurer waives its defence,

up to 25 percent of the sum insured in Basis PLUS and up to 50 percent in Premium, unless theft,

alcohol or drugs caused the loss.

Only intent is always excluded, and partial cover does not carry your own errors.

Are storm, theft and vandalism covered on a fishing boat?

Storm, fire, lightning and theft of the whole fishing boat are covered already under partial cover.

Sinking, theft of parts including the outboard and vandalism come with full cover from Basis-Plus.

This applies in winter storage and on the trailer as well, except under a seasonal policy.

Salvage is paid on top when the authority orders it: up to the sum insured in Basis,

up to 1 million euros in Basis-Plus and up to 2.5 million in Premium.

New value or current value: what is paid for a fishing boat on a total loss?

In Premium the agreed value, the amount you and the insurer fixed when the policy started,

with no deduction for the age of the fishing boat and no argument after the loss.

In Basis-Plus the same applies up to five years of age,

or later while the current value still reaches half the sum insured, once replacement is shown;

otherwise the current value is paid.

In Basis, the partial cover, the current value is paid,

meaning what the fishing boat was worth immediately before the loss,

less a scaled age deduction after three years.

Does the cover apply to a fishing boat abroad?

Yes, within the cruising area stated in the policy and on the way there on the trailer or roof

rack.

For a fishing boat that is usually Europe including the Mediterranean, worldwide on request.

Premium covers six weeks a year outside the agreed area, the other tariffs only by prior agreement.

Italy, Spain, Croatia (from 15 kW), Greece,

Denmark and Swiss waters require liability cover by law.

Is insurance for a fishing boat required by law?

Not in Germany, with one exception:

on the Swiss part of Lake Constance liability cover is compulsory, as on all Swiss waters.

Italy, Spain, Croatia from 15 kW, Greece and Denmark require it too.

Regardless of the law, most marinas,

clubs and winter storage yards ask for proof before they let you a berth for the fishing boat.
