Boat finance: what your boat costs per month

Few boats are bought outright. Whether it is a marine loan from a bank, finance arranged by the dealer or a lease through your company, this page shows who finances boats in Germany, Austria and Spain, on what terms, and what the monthly payment comes to at your price.

We are a boat insurer, not a lender. But no lender pays out without hull cover and the lender named on the policy, so we sit at the table in every boat finance deal. That is why we know the market, and why one enquiry at the bottom of this page covers both.

Repayment calculator

Enter price, deposit, term and rate and the monthly payment appears straight away. A balloon payment lowers the monthly figure but leaves a lump sum at the end, which you pay off, refinance or cover by selling the boat.

An example. Your rate depends on credit history, term and boat.

Share of the price due in one sum at the end. 0 means no balloon.

Monthly payment
Amount financed
Balloon at the end
Interest over the term
Total cost including deposit

The calculator uses the rate you enter and is not an offer. Only the lender can quote a binding APR, after checking your documents. The hull insurance every lender requires is not included in the payment.

Who finances boats

Grouped by type of lender, not ranked. The details come from the lenders' own public pages. We only show a rate where the lender publishes one, because rates move all the time.

A lender is missing, or you finance boats yourself? Use the form at the bottom of the page.

Banks with their own boat finance

The bank lends itself, directly or through the dealer. The boat is the security, so rate and term are usually better than with an unsecured personal loan.

How boat finance works

  1. Settle on the boat and the priceEverything starts from the purchase price. For used boats, most lenders want to see the bill of sale and, above a certain amount, a survey.
  2. Work out the paymentUse the calculator above. Remember the running costs: berth, winter storage and insurance come on top of the instalment.
  3. ApplyDirectly with a lender, through the dealer or with our form. The lender checks income, existing credit and your credit file in your country of residence.
  4. Arrange hull cover with the lender notedThe lender pays out once hull cover is in place and the lender is named as loss payee. Give us the lender and the loan reference and the confirmation goes out with the policy.
  5. Payout and handoverThe lender pays the seller and you take the boat. Until the last instalment the lender usually keeps a security interest in it.

What lenders require

Details vary between lenders and countries, the core is the same everywhere.

Hull cover for the whole termThe boat is the lender's security. No hull cover, no payout, and if the cover lapses before the last instalment, the lender is told.
Lender named on the policyCalled a Sicherungsschein in Germany, Vinkulierung in Austria, a beneficiary clause in Spain. In a claim, the lender is paid up to the outstanding balance.
Security over the boatOwnership transferred as security, retention of title, or in Spain a registered charge for larger yachts. You may not sell without the lender's consent.
Income and credit checkPayslips or tax returns and a credit check. The payment has to be affordable alongside everything else you pay.
DepositSpecialist lenders usually finance 70 to 80 per cent, so expect 20 to 33 per cent down. A larger deposit tends to bring a better rate.
Age of the boatA common rule: age of the boat plus term no more than 25 years. Used boats usually need a valuation survey.

The trap: a balance left after a total loss

After a total loss, the settlement goes to the lender up to the outstanding balance. If the sum insured is too low or the insurer deducts for age, the money falls short and you keep paying for a boat that no longer exists.

Set the sum insured at a realistic replacement value and ask for an agreed value rather than market value. The gap is widest with a balloon payment: the balance barely falls until the end, the value of the boat does.

Questions about boat finance

What rate does a boat loan cost?

It depends on your credit history, the term, the deposit and the boat, and it follows market rates. Where lenders publish a rate, it is shown in the overview with its date. Only the lender's offer is binding.

How much deposit do I need?

With specialist lenders usually 20 to 33 per cent of the price. Without a deposit, the realistic route is an unsecured personal loan, which is capped and usually dearer.

What is a balloon payment?

Part of the price that is not paid off monthly but in one sum at the end. The monthly payment falls, total interest rises, and at the end you need the money or a new loan.

Can I finance a used boat?

Yes. Lenders look at how old the boat will be at the end of the term and ask for a survey above a certain amount.

Does a financed boat have to be insured?

Yes. Lenders require hull cover for the full term with the lender named on the policy. Third-party liability is compulsory in Spain for motor boats and boats over six metres, and in many marinas elsewhere.

Does NAMMERT arrange loans itself?

No, we are a boat insurer. With your consent we pass your enquiry to a finance partner, who makes the offer and runs the credit check. We provide the hull cover the lender requires.

Why enquire through NAMMERT

One enquiry instead of twoNo lender pays out without hull cover and the lender named on the policy. With us both come together, so the payout does not stall on a missing document the week before handover.
Protection against a remaining balanceWe match the sum insured to your loan, so that after a total loss you are not left paying for a boat that no longer exists. The lender will not point this out, it gets its money either way.
We know boatsAge of the boat, surveys, buying used, cruising area: these are where boat finance gets stuck, and we have seen them in claims files for decades.
