Harbour Night.

In the evening the shipping forecast announces a low, gusts to force ten. Twelve boats lie in the same harbour, with twelve different policies. The whole night is written out here: nine hours from 21:00 to 06:00, every event with its time and its amount, and at dawn the answer of who carries it.

The harbour at 21:00

Twelve boats, twelve policies.

Six boats lie on pier A, five on pier B, the Fortuna on a mooring. The sums insured run from 6,500 euros to 380,000 euros, the policies from liability alone to full cover on the Premium tariff. That difference alone decides every single invoice over the next nine hours.

21:00 to 06:00

Nine hours, half hour by half hour.

This is how the wind runs through the night, in Beaufort. At 21:00 it is five, from 23:30 it stands at storm force, at 01:00 and 01:30 it peaks at ten Beaufort, and at 05:40 it drops below six again.

The log of the night

Nine entries, in the order in which they fall. The amount is the total damage including the deductible, the line below it names who carries it in the morning.

  1. 21:40Anna II

A round on the Anna II: lines doubled, bilge pump checked, cover strapped down again.

    NO DAMAGE0 €

  2. 22:55Luv

The seam of the Luv’s old cover tears, rain runs onto switch panel and radio for two hours.

    THE OWNER2,100 €

  3. 23:50Mücke

A gust lays the Mücke flat against the finger pier, the mast breaks at the spreader fitting. Storm from force 8: partial cover.

    PARTIAL COVER1,900 €

  4. 00:35Kiek mol

The Kiek mol’s port fender bursts, the boat works in its berth and chafes the hull of the Blaubeere.

    THIRD-PARTY LIABILITY1,450 €

  5. 00:40Kiek mol

The Kiek mol’s own damage: collision is a full-cover matter, the policy says partial.

    THE OWNER600 €

  6. 01:10Fortuna

The Fortuna’s mooring line chafes through. She drags at anchor and strands on the breakwater’s rock fill: hull 6,500 euros, salvage 2,400 euros.

    FULL COVER8,900 €

  7. 01:25Nordwind

A piece of driftwood strikes the Nordwind’s rudder blade. Collision with flotsam: full cover.

    FULL COVER1,200 €

  8. 03:30Pütt

A branch of the harbour elm breaks and hits the Pütt’s foredeck. Storm damage: partial cover.

    PARTIAL COVER900 €

  9. 05:40Harbour

The wind drops below six Beaufort. Eleven skippers slept, one had a look first.

    NO DAMAGE0 €

06:00, the morning after

The same night, twelve invoices.

At 06:00 it is over. The harbour holds 17,050 euros of damage, spread not across twelve boats but across four kinds of invoice: full cover carries the most, the owners’ own share is larger than the liability case, and the most expensive boat of the night was well insured.

Settlement of Harbour Night at 06:00, 17,050 euros of damage by who pays
Who pays Amount Share
Full cover 9,600 € 56.3 per cent
Partial cover 2,300 € 13.5 per cent
Neighbour’s liability 1,450 € 8.5 per cent
The owner 3,700 € 21.7 per cent
Damage across the harbour 17,050 € 100 per cent

The deductible is taken as 250 euros per hull claim here and sits in the owner’s line, not with the hull cover. That is why the owner stands at 3,700 euros, above the liability case of 1,450 euros.

Boat by boat

What the night means for each boat.

Twelve files, each with its entries and the clause of the conditions that answers in the morning. Four boats come through the night without a single entry.

Nordwind

Sailing yacht, 10.4 m, sum insured 78,000 €

LIABILITY AND FULL COVER

01:25FULL COVER, 1,200 €

A piece of driftwood strikes the Nordwind’s rudder blade. Collision with flotsam: full cover.

Flotsam counts as collision, not as storm. With partial cover the 1,200 euros on the rudder would have stayed with the owner; full cover carries them down to the deductible.

Deern

Motorboat, 6.6 m, sum insured 24,000 €

LIABILITY AND PARTIAL COVER

06:00QUIET

No entry up to this hour.

No claim this night. Most harbour nights are exactly that; priced in is the one that is not.

Mücke

Sailing dinghy, 4.2 m, sum insured 6,500 €

LIABILITY AND PARTIAL COVER

23:50PARTIAL COVER, 1,900 €

A gust lays the Mücke flat against the finger pier, the mast breaks at the spreader fitting. Storm from force 8: partial cover.

A mast broken by a gust is storm damage and therefore a partial-cover benefit. Worn terminals after twenty years would have been wear, and that difference decides the settlement.

Kess

Sports boat, 5.9 m, sum insured 18,000 €

LIABILITY AND FULL COVER

06:00QUIET

No entry up to this hour.

No claim this night. Most harbour nights are exactly that; priced in is the one that is not.

Jan

Inflatable, 3.8 m, sum insured 9,000 €

LIABILITY ONLY

06:00QUIET

No entry up to this hour.

No claim this night. Most harbour nights are exactly that; priced in is the one that is not.

Anna II

Houseboat, 11 m, sum insured 140,000 €

LIABILITY AND FULL COVER

21:40NO DAMAGE, 0 €

A round on the Anna II: lines doubled, bilge pump checked, cover strapped down again.

No claim, and deliberately so: water ingress from neglected maintenance is covered by no hull policy. The checked bilge pump was the cheapest decision of the night.

Kiek mol

Sports boat, 6.2 m, sum insured 21,000 €

LIABILITY AND PARTIAL COVER

00:35THIRD-PARTY LIABILITY, 1,450 €

The Kiek mol’s port fender bursts, the boat works in its berth and chafes the hull of the Blaubeere.

00:40THE OWNER, 600 €

The Kiek mol’s own damage: collision is a full-cover matter, the policy says partial.

Two invoices from one fender: the neighbour’s damage is carried in full by liability, the own damage stays with the owner under partial cover. With full cover it would have been a 250-euro deductible instead of 600.

Blaubeere

Motorboat, 6.8 m, sum insured 26,000 €

LIABILITY AND FULL COVER

00:35THIRD-PARTY LIABILITY, 1,450 €

The Kiek mol’s port fender bursts, the boat works in its berth and chafes the hull of the Blaubeere.

The Blaubeere has her damage paid by the neighbour’s liability. Her own policy stays untouched, no deductible, no claims record.

Luv

Motorboat, 5.8 m, sum insured 15,000 €

LIABILITY ONLY

22:55THE OWNER, 2,100 €

The seam of the Luv’s old cover tears, rain runs onto switch panel and radio for two hours.

The policy says liability only, so the storm damage stays with the owner. With partial cover the wet electronics would have been paid, the porous cover itself, as wear, would not.

Pütt

Fishing boat, 5.2 m, sum insured 12,000 €

LIABILITY AND PARTIAL COVER

03:30PARTIAL COVER, 900 €

A branch of the harbour elm breaks and hits the Pütt’s foredeck. Storm damage: partial cover.

The falling branch is storm damage, partial cover is enough here. After the deductible, 250 euros stay with the owner.

Libelle

Jetski, sum insured 14,000 €

FULL COVER, PREMIUM TARIFF

06:00QUIET

No entry up to this hour.

No claim this night. Most harbour nights are exactly that; priced in is the one that is not.

Fortuna

Motor yacht, 15 m, sum insured 380,000 €

LIABILITY AND FULL COVER

01:10FULL COVER, 8,900 €

The Fortuna’s mooring line chafes through. She drags at anchor and strands on the breakwater’s rock fill: hull 6,500 euros, salvage 2,400 euros.

Dragging and stranding are full-cover cases, not the storm chapter. Salvage is included, with NAMMERT without limit, and the deductible remains the only item of one’s own.

Three sentences on the night

Same wind, different cover.

Same wind, different cover

The dismasting at 23:50 is storm damage, so partial cover answers. The Fortuna, dragging and stranding at 01:10, is a full-cover case: dragging and stranding are not in the storm chapter. The same night, two different clauses of the conditions.

The neighbour is the costliest coincidence

A burst fender, 1,450 euros on someone else’s hull: no hull cover pays for that, the liability of the boat that caused it does. It is the one cover nobody wants to argue about on the pontoon in the morning.

The cheapest item of the night

The round at 21:40: lines doubled, bilge pump checked. It appears in no policy and costs nothing, it merely saves the policy the work. Eleven skippers slept, one had a look first.

The twelve boats are invented, the rules are real: allocation and amounts follow our conditions, storm from wind force 8, the deductible taken as 250 euros here. The cover in full, with every boat type and cruising range, is on one page.
