Motorboat insurance
The premium hangs on the engine
German motorboat tariffs are rated on engine power, not on what the boat is worth. That is why two boats of the same length can be priced far apart, and why a well kept older hull with a modest engine stays cheap to insure.
In short
What does motorboat insurance cost?
Liability starts at 49 euros a year and is rated on engine power, not on the value of the boat. Full cover includes theft of the outboard, water skiing is covered, the tender comes free up to 30 hp, and from Basis-Plus the trailer sits in the liability section at no extra premium.
Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.
Partial cover and full cover
Partial covers what happens to the boat with nobody at the helm. Full adds what happens while she is being driven.
What sets a motorboat apart
Six points where a motorboat policy differs from a sailing one.
Rated on horsepower
The premium follows engine output. Repower the boat and the premium moves, so tell us before the season, not after a claim.
Outboard theft
Covered under full cover with no approved immobiliser required. That clause is what keeps most outboard claims out elsewhere.
Towing water skiers
Water skiing, wakeboarding and towed toys are included in liability. Check any competing quote for a towing exclusion.
Tender at no extra premium
Free up to 30 hp and within ten nautical miles of the mother boat. Beyond that it needs a policy of its own.
Trailer from Basis-Plus
Carried in the liability section without extra premium, uncoupled and while manoeuvring as well.
Agreed value
The sum is set in writing before anything happens, so a total loss is not an argument about what a used hull was worth that morning.
Plainly said
Power is not the same as value
A 30 year old sports boat with a fresh 300 hp outboard costs more to insure than a modern displacement cruiser worth three times as much. That looks unfair until the claims files are read: power is what causes the collisions, and the value only decides what the repair costs.
If your boat is fast and your hull is modest, ask for the liability and full cover figures separately. The split tells you where the money actually goes.
Before you buy
Which engine figure counts?
Rated output at the crankshaft in kW, taken from the engine plate or the papers. If the boat carries two engines, both go in.

The three questions you actually have
Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.
“Will they actually pay?”
We are an Assekuradeur; a managing general agent that underwrites and settles claims under its own authority. Our own claims department, appointed surveyors, more than 2,000 partner yards. Cover checked within 24 hours, release or a survey appointment within 48. We settle directly with the yard; you pay the deductible and nothing else.
What happens in the first 48 hours →“Who picks up the phone?”
A family firm since 1989, now in its second generation, with three of its own offices: Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre, no franchise. You get a named contact from the first hour; and after office hours, a number somebody answers.

Find the same cover cheaper elsewhere and we make up the difference. Our comparison sets seven providers against the same criteria; including the segments where somebody else comes out ahead of us, and the one where we are the most expensive in the field.
