Boat trailer insurance
The moment the coupling lets go
A trailer that comes off does its damage to somebody else, and that is a liability question, not a hull one. German law does not require a separate insurance certificate for a boat trailer under our cover, which is exactly why owners forget to mention it at all.
In short
Does a boat trailer need its own insurance?
Not with us: from Basis-Plus the trailer is carried in the liability section at no extra premium, coupled, uncoupled and while manoeuvring. No separate German insurance certificate is needed. Theft of the trailer and transport damage to the boat run through the hull section.
Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.
Who pays when the trailer is involved
Four parties, and the split surprises most owners.
Three ways it goes wrong
All three are ordinary, and all three have been claimed.
Nobody declared the trailer
Cover from Basis-Plus is automatic, but the trailer still has to be in the application. Declaring it costs nothing.
A long drive south
Stone chips, chafing straps and damage while manoeuvring are the most frequent reports of all, and they are hull claims.
A tariff below Basis-Plus
On the entry tariff the trailer is not in the liability section. That is the single line worth checking before a road trip.
Plainly said
A certificate is not the same as cover
Boat trailers in Germany can be registered on their own plate or run on the towing vehicle. Neither arrangement says anything about whether your boat policy covers what the trailer does when it is uncoupled.
Ask any provider for the clause on the uncoupled trailer and on manoeuvring by hand. If the answer is a shrug, the answer is no.

What we need for a quote

The three questions you actually have
Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.
“Will they actually pay?”
We are an Assekuradeur; a managing general agent that underwrites and settles claims under its own authority. Our own claims department, appointed surveyors, more than 2,000 partner yards. Cover checked within 24 hours, release or a survey appointment within 48. We settle directly with the yard; you pay the deductible and nothing else.
What happens in the first 48 hours →“Who picks up the phone?”
A family firm since 1989, now in its second generation, with three of its own offices: Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin, Salzburg and Palma de Mallorca. No call centre, no franchise. You get a named contact from the first hour; and after office hours, a number somebody answers.

Find the same cover cheaper elsewhere and we make up the difference. Our comparison sets seven providers against the same criteria; including the segments where somebody else comes out ahead of us, and the one where we are the most expensive in the field.
