Electric boat insurance

On an electric boat the battery is the policy

Half the value of an electric boat sits in cells and power electronics, and that is precisely the part a wording written for petrol engines never mentions. What follows is not a surcharge, it is a different sentence in the conditions.

In short

Is the battery covered on an electric boat?

Yes, batteries and charging equipment are covered in every tariff, including animal bite, short circuit and the clearing and disposal costs after a battery fire. Liability starts at 49 euros a year. Policies written for combustion engines fail exactly here.

Figures from the NAMMERT tariff, August 2026, annual premium including insurance tax.

Partial cover and full cover

Partial covers the boat at rest, full adds what happens under way. The electric parts sit in both.

Battery and charger All tariffsCells, battery management and charging equipment, aboard and ashore.
Animal bite All tariffsMarten and rodent damage to cabling, the classic winter storage claim.
Short circuit All tariffsIncluding consequential damage to the drive electronics.
Clearing and disposal All tariffsAfter a battery fire, disposal of the cells is a five figure item on its own.
Fire and explosion PartialAfloat and in the shed, including a fire spreading from a neighbouring boat.
Water ingress into the drive FullAfter grounding or swamping, motor and controller included.
Charging at the pontoon LiabilityDamage caused to the marina installation while charging.
Your own mistake FullHandling errors short of intent. Gross negligence is covered by tariff.

Six points a petrol wording misses

None of them is exotic. All of them are ordinary on an electric boat.

Cells in every tariff

Not an optional extra and not limited to the entry tariff. The battery is insured with the boat from the first day.

Charging equipment ashore

The charger and the shore installation belong to the risk, because that is where most electrical damage starts.

Animal bite

Rodents in winter storage are the most common electrical claim of all, and many wordings quietly exclude them.

Disposal after a fire

A burnt battery has to be cooled, transported and disposed of as hazardous waste. That cost is inside the cover.

Short circuit and electronics

Consequential damage to controller and drive is covered, not only the component that failed.

Agreed value with the battery

The sum insured includes the battery, so a total loss does not settle on the value of an empty hull.

Plainly said

Where the value really sits

On a ten metre electric launch, the pack can be a third of the purchase price and it ages on its own schedule. Insure the boat and forget the pack, and the sum insured is wrong before the first season is over.

Tell us the capacity in kilowatt hours and the year the pack was fitted. If it was replaced later, that raises the agreed value rather than complicating the claim.

The three questions you actually have

Not “what does it cost”; you can work that out yourself in a minute. These are the three nobody asks an insurer out loud. Here they are, with the answers we can back up.

“Will they actually pay?”

We are an Assekuradeur; a managing general agent that underwrites and settles claims under its own authority. Our own claims department, appointed surveyors, more than 2,000 partner yards. Cover checked within 24 hours, release or a survey appointment within 48. We settle directly with the yard; you pay the deductible and nothing else.

The policy wording is German; we go through it with you in English Our terms and conditions, the insurance product information documents and the cancellation notice exist in German, and the German wording is the binding one. We will not pretend otherwise. What we do: send you the product information documents translated, and walk you through the cover on the phone in English before you sign anything. The full cover, clause by clause, is written out in English on our detail page. Ask us for the documents and we send them the same working day.
