Emergency on board, to print out and laminate
Two A4 pages for the chart table or beside the radio. Page 1 takes the boat details, the contacts and the policy number, page 2 carries the distress call to read aloud in English and German. Fill it in before you sail, laminate it, show it to everybody on board.

Keep to hand on board: policy, international certificate of insurance, ship's papers, proof of ownership, licences, radio certificate, crew list, plus one set of copies ashore.
04 · The call that decides the money
Call us before you sign a salvage or towage agreement: a salvage award under maritime law is not measured in hours worked and can exceed the value of the boat. Two minutes on the telephone are enough. Secure the evidence as soon as it is safe to do so, photographs of the damage, the surroundings and the position, names of witnesses, and after a collision a collision report without any admission of fault.

The distress call, to read aloud
Speak loudly and slowly. English or German, do not mix the two. Everybody on board has to be able to do this, not just the skipper.

First set off the DSC distress alert on channel 70 (hold the red button down), then read this out on channel 16. No answer? Repeat it, then change channel or use the satellite link and the EPIRB.

DDuring and after the distress call
- Lifejackets on, harnesses clipped on, count everybody
- Fix the position: MOB button on the plotter, note the time
- Keep channel 16 open; follow the instructions of the rescue centre
- Get the grab bag, papers, medicines and water ready
- Only once everybody is safe: photograph the damage
- Before any salvage or towage agreement: call NAMMERT · after a collision, a collision report
