When a battery burns, it burns fast
Two fires on Bavarian lakes show what sets a battery fire on board apart from any other blaze. It is not the frequency, it is the speed.

In early September 2026 smoke rose from an electrically powered hire boat on the Wörthsee. Four women jumped into the water, nobody was hurt, the boat was destroyed. Three fire brigades attended. Back in 2023 an electric boat on the Ammersee caught fire while charging at the pontoon, and there too the boat was a total loss.
The difference from an engine fire lies in the physics. Once a lithium cell enters the state engineers call thermal runaway, it supplies the oxygen for its own reaction. Smothering does not help, and cooling needs a great deal of water over a long period. Both are difficult on the water, and the plastic hull underneath burns well.
Modern systems reduce the risk considerably. A battery management system that aborts charging on overheating, fixed and watertight cells and a matched system from one supplier are the norm on boats that leave the yard electric. The cases that concern us are different ones: batteries retrofitted from the accessory trade, chargers that do not belong to the battery, and charging overnight at an unattended pontoon.
Two lake fires are not a statistic. They are useful anyway, because they show how little time there is between the first smoke and a total loss once a pack is involved. The same sequence has been reported from marinas in several countries, with charging at the centre of it.
What this means for owners
What matters after a fire is rarely the cause of it. The questions that get asked are who installed the system and whether recognised technical rules were followed. Anyone retrofitting should keep the invoice from the specialist firm. In a claim it is worth more than any explanation.
