South America moves a little closer

Since 1 May 2026 the trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur states has been applied provisionally. For European boatbuilding that is a market opening after years in which markets rather closed.

Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay have ratified the interim trade agreement with the European Union. It has been applied provisionally since 1 May 2026, which means the tariff reductions start even though the full agreement is not yet in force. The reduction runs over fifteen years, and part of the tariffs fell away immediately.

For the boating trade Brazil is the most important of the four markets. It has the best organised leisure boating economy, with separate associations for yards and for marinas. Argentina follows as the second core market, where production is more strongly shaped by mid sized firms.

Tariff rates are not uniform across the four states, and the schedule differs by product. Anyone who needs to know which rate applies to a particular product in a particular destination country will find it in the European Commission Access2Markets database. It is broken down by customs tariff number and country of origin.

For owners rather than builders the interesting part comes later. More European boats going south means more boats coming back north years afterwards. They arrive with paperwork assembled under a different system.

What this means for owners

This reaches us indirectly but noticeably. A boat going to South America ends up far outside the waters a European owner normally sails, and a boat coming from there arrives with papers that do not follow the European pattern. Both can be arranged, but not in passing: cruising area, transport route and proof of origin belong settled before the purchase, not after.
