Is my dog covered by liability insurance on holiday abroad?
In short
Yes, if you have German dog liability insurance (Hundehaftpflicht), your dog is generally covered on holiday abroad. In the EU many tariffs cover stays without a time limit, worldwide usually for one to five years, as long as your main residence stays in Germany. Personal liability insurance does not help here: it never covers your own dog.
Cover abroad is included in the premium. What dog liability insurance costs in Germany, based on published starting prices.

The dog liability insurer checks the claim and pays the justified part. Without a policy you are liable yourself as the keeper, even if you did nothing wrong.
What dog liability insurance does abroad
Your dog liability insurance travels with you. If your dog bites another dog on the beach, scratches the door of the holiday flat or runs into the road and a scooter rider falls, it pays justified claims and fights excessive ones.
Claims abroad can turn out differently from claims at home, for example because of treatment costs or a return transport. A high sum insured is therefore especially important when you travel.
How long cover lasts
The permitted duration is set out in your policy terms and varies a lot between tariffs. Stiftung Warentest uses three years in the EU and one year worldwide as a minimum standard. Many current tariffs go further.
If you move abroad with your dog for good, your German cover ends. You then need a policy in your new country of residence. The same applies the other way round: a dog policy from your home country may not cover you once you live in Germany.
Trip
Usual position

Longer stay in the EU
at least three years in good tariffs
Holiday outside Europe
covered, usually one to five years
USA and Canada
excluded in some tariffs
Moving abroad permanently
not covered
Local rules and papers
Lead and muzzle rules and bans on certain breeds are set by each country. Breaking them can cause trouble locally, and some tariffs pay less if you breach your duties as a keeper. Good tariffs waive this; the terms tell you.
For travel within the EU your dog needs a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and the EU pet passport. Countries outside the EU sometimes have longer deadlines, such as a blood test months before travel. That is not an insurance question, but without papers the holiday often ends at the border.
When you need nothing extra
A separate travel liability policy for your dog is usually unnecessary if your contract covers holidays. You only need to check for trips to the USA or Canada, long stays outside Europe and old contracts with a short limit for stays abroad.
Step by step
Look up the permitted duration for the EU and worldwide in your terms.
Check whether your destination is excluded, such as the USA or Canada.
Check whether damage to holiday flats and hotels is covered.
Read the lead, muzzle and breed rules of the destination.
Check microchip, rabies vaccination and pet passport in good time.
