Insurance for influencers, creators and bloggers in Germany

A reel with someone else's music, a brand deal without an ad label, a hacked account with 200,000 followers. For creators these are not rare accidents but everyday risks, and they land on you personally. This page shows which cover fits and what it costs.

Insurance for influencers and content creators

The question almost everyone asks first

Will insurance pay if I get a warning letter for hidden advertising?

If your professional indemnity includes unfair competition law, the insurer checks the warning letter, pushes back on excessive demands and pays justified claims. Not covered are contractual penalties from a cease and desist declaration you have already signed, and deliberate breaches. So do not sign anything before you have reported the case.

What goes wrong in this trade

  1. 01

    Music and images

A song in the background, a photo from a search engine, a clip from a series: rights holders and agencies find infringements automatically.

  2. 02

    Ad labelling

If you show, link to or were given a product, German law says you must label it as advertising. Associations and competitors send warning letters over missing labels all the time.

  3. 03

    Mistakes in brand deals

A wrong discount code, an old price, a remark that harms the brand: the partner wants compensation.

  4. 04

    Hacked account

Hijacked profiles are used for scams, and reach and income collapse. Getting the account back costs time and money.

  5. 05

    Shoots and events

Filming in a café, at events or while travelling can cause injury and property damage that you are liable for.

  6. 06

    Kit on the move

Camera, laptop, gimbal and drone travel with you constantly and get stolen, dropped or soaked.

The insurance you need

Essential

Professional indemnity

Covers financial loss and warning letters under copyright, trade mark, personality and unfair competition law, which are the typical creator claims.

Strongly advised

Cyber insurance

Pays for IT forensics, account recovery and crisis communication after a hack.

Business liability

Covers injury and property damage at shoots, events and on location for brand partners.

Electronic equipment

Replaces camera, smartphone, laptop and lighting after breakage, theft and water damage, including while travelling.

Depends on the business

Drone insurance

If you film with a drone you need commercial drone liability insurance; German law requires it.

Occupational disability

Without your face, voice and health there is no content, and the self employed have no state cover for this in Germany.

What it costs: example prices

Creator policies are cheap while turnover is modest. They cost more with high brand deal income, your own team and topics such as money, health or product testing.

Practical tips from your broker

  1. Make sure unfair competition law, and with it warning letters over ad labelling, is expressly included.
  2. Do not sign a cease and desist declaration before the insurer knows about the case; later contractual penalties are not covered.
  3. Ask whether the cyber policy covers social media accounts and lost income after a hack.
  4. Insure your kit worldwide, including in checked flight baggage and in hire cars.
  5. If a brand contract asks you to accept more liability than the law requires, show that clause to the insurer first.
  6. For topics such as money, law and health you need a higher limit for your followers' financial losses.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Which insurance do I need as an influencer?

First, professional indemnity that covers financial loss and rights infringements. Cyber insurance and equipment insurance also make sense.

What does influencer insurance cost?

Entry level cover is about €135 to €300 a year. With brand deal income, public liability and equipment it is usually €600 to €1,400.

Is a hacked Instagram account insured?

Yes, through cyber insurance that expressly includes social media accounts. It pays specialists for recovery and crisis communication.

Am I covered by a Berufsgenossenschaft as a creator?

Not automatically if you are solo self employed. You can join this statutory accident insurer voluntarily; once you have employees membership is compulsory.

Does my personal liability insurance cover my creator work?

No. As soon as you earn money from it, it counts as business activity, and personal liability insurance will not pay.

Do I need separate insurance for drone videos?

Yes. Every drone must have owner's liability insurance, and a commercial policy once you earn money with it.
