In short
For an adult with an office job, good private accident insurance (Unfallversicherung) with a basic sum of EUR 100,000 and 350 percent progression usually costs EUR 60 to 180 a year. For manual trades it is about EUR 120 to 260. Your job, the basic sum and add-ons such as an accident pension decide the price.
Guide figures from published tariff examples, basic sum EUR 100,000.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Adult, office job, progression 350 percent | about EUR 60 to 180 a year |
| Adult, manual trade, progression 350 percent | about EUR 120 to 260 a year |
| Simple tariff, progression 225 percent, no accident pension | about EUR 44 to 215 a year |

Worked example
This is how the premium comes about when the basic sum follows the rule of thumb.
| Basic sum | EUR 150,000 |
| Progression 350 percent | up to EUR 525,000 |
| Premium | about EUR 90 to 270 a year |
Together about EUR 8 to 23 a month.
Insurers sort jobs into risk groups. If you work with your hands, you pay more.
On top of that come the basic sum (Grundsumme), the progression and add-ons such as an accident pension, a daily hospital allowance or a sum paid on death.
| Factor | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| Job | strong, manual trades often cost twice as much |
| Basic sum | direct |
| Progression | small compared with the extra benefit |
| Accident pension | significant |
| Daily hospital allowance | usually unnecessary, but still costs money |
Every employee in Germany is covered by statutory accident insurance (gesetzliche Unfallversicherung), but only at work and on the way to and from work. Accidents in your free time, at home or on holiday are not covered. That is the gap private accident insurance fills, usually around the clock and worldwide.
It pays a lump sum based on how permanently you are impaired. For arms, legs, eyes and other body parts a fixed table (Gliedertaxe) sets the percentage. Progression raises the payout for severe cases: with 350 percent, full disability pays three and a half times the basic sum. It does not replace your income if you cannot work; that is occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung). Application forms and health questions are usually in German.
A daily hospital allowance and high death benefits add little. The money is better spent on a higher basic sum.
Paying yearly instead of monthly saves a few percent with many tariffs.
Cheap tariffs often have a weak disability table. Then the same injury brings less money.
Strict deductions for previous illnesses and short deadlines also cost a lot when it matters.
Questions and answers
For office jobs usually about EUR 5 to 15, for manual trades about EUR 10 to 22.
Usually less than for adults, because there is no job risk.
Mainly if you cannot get occupational disability insurance. It makes the premium noticeably higher.
Most tariffs apply worldwide and around the clock. If you move abroad for good, tell your insurer, because the contract may end or change.
As a provision expense within the maximum amounts; the work-related share can count as income-related expenses. Ask a tax adviser.
