In short
For a bike worth EUR 1,000, the bike add-on of your contents insurance often costs only around EUR 50 a year. A separate bike insurance with repairs starts at about EUR 50 and can cost much more. For an e-bike worth EUR 3,000 you are at about EUR 60 to 140. Your city and the scope of cover drive the price.
Published annual premiums, as of 2026.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| EUR 1,000 bike, contents insurance with bike add-on | around EUR 50 a year |
| EUR 1,000 bike, separate fully comprehensive policy | about EUR 50 to 450 a year |
| EUR 3,000 e-bike, separate policy | about EUR 60 to 140 a year |
Guide values as of September 2026 from publicly quoted tariff examples. The range is wide because the scope of cover varies a lot.
Worked example
Contents insurance with bike add-on or a separate policy?
| Contents insurance with EUR 1,500 bike limit | about EUR 20 to 50 extra |
| Separate bike insurance with repairs | about EUR 70 to 120 |
| Difference in cover | repairs and crash damage only in the separate policy |
If theft is your only worry, contents insurance is cheaper. Worked example with guide values.
The bike add-on of your contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) pays only for theft and usually up to a fixed amount. A separate bike insurance (Fahrradversicherung) also pays for damage after a fall or vandalism, often for wear too.
For an everyday bike up to about EUR 1,000, contents insurance is usually enough. For more expensive bikes and e-bikes, a separate policy becomes interesting.
| Bike value | Sensible solution | Cost per year |
|---|---|---|
| up to EUR 1,000 | contents insurance with bike add-on | often around EUR 50 extra or less |
| EUR 1,000 to 2,000 | contents insurance with higher limit or separate policy | about EUR 50 to 150 |
| E-bike around EUR 3,000 | separate bike insurance | about EUR 60 to 140 |
Bike theft is common in German cities, and a bike locked outside overnight is only covered if your policy says so. Many older contents tariffs had a night clause (Nachtzeitklausel) that excluded theft at night, so check the wording.
Insurers usually ask for the purchase receipt and frame number (Rahmennummer). If you brought your bike from abroad, keep the original receipt and photograph the frame number now.
The most important factor is where you live: in cities with many thefts you pay noticeably more. Then come the bike's value and the scope of cover.
Theft-only policies are cheap. If you also insure repairs, battery and wear, you pay accordingly more.
A cheap bike that stands in the cellar at night is well covered by contents insurance. A separate bike insurance then quickly costs more than the bike would bring in a claim.
Check your contents insurance first. Sometimes bike cover is already included, only with a limit that is too low.
Questions and answers
Through contents insurance often a few euros, a separate policy for an e-bike about EUR 5 to 12.
Not always. The bike add-on often has to be chosen separately.
Rarely. The premium then hardly matches the value.
Only a separate bike insurance with damage cover does, contents insurance does not.
Because more bikes are stolen there and insurers price by region.
