In short
Personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) usually costs singles EUR 40 to 120 a year and families about EUR 60 to 180. Good family tariffs without a deductible start at around EUR 50 to 80. Look for cover of at least EUR 10 million and default cover (Forderungsausfalldeckung).
Guide figures from published tariff examples and test results.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Single, cover of EUR 10 to 50 million | about EUR 40 to 120 a year |
| Family with children | about EUR 60 to 180 a year |
| Very good family tariff without deductible | from about EUR 48 to 80 a year |
| Comprehensive tariff with EUR 250 to 300 deductible | about EUR 80 to 95 instead of EUR 120 to 145 |

Worked example
How solid cover adds up.
| Family tariff, EUR 50 million cover | about EUR 80 to 120 |
| EUR 250 deductible | about EUR 25 to 40 less |
Together about EUR 55 to 95 a year, roughly EUR 5 to 8 a month.
Unlike contents insurance, where you live hardly matters. What counts is who is covered, the cover amount and which extras the tariff includes.
The difference between single and family is often smaller than expected, sometimes only EUR 10 to 30 a year.
| Factor | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| Single or family | medium, often EUR 10 to 30 difference |
| Cover of EUR 10 instead of 50 million | small |
| Deductible of EUR 250 to 300 | noticeable, often a third less |
| Lost keys, rented property, favours | small to medium |
| Civil servants and public sector | often cheaper |
German law makes you liable without limit for damage you cause to others through negligence, whether you knock over a cyclist or flood the flat below. In the UK and US this cover often comes inside home or renters insurance. In Germany it is a separate policy, and many newcomers take it out in their first weeks. Some landlords ask for proof.
It covers you across Europe and usually worldwide for trips, but not your own things and not your car. Car damage to others is covered by the mandatory motor liability insurance.
Very cheap tariffs often leave out borrowed items, lost keys or damage caused by children too young to be liable. Yet these are everyday cases, and lost keys to a rented flat are among the most common claims.
Also check the default cover: it pays when someone without insurance and without money causes you damage.
A deductible is the most honest way to save. You pay small claims yourself, large ones stay fully covered.
Old policies from the 2000s often have low cover amounts and missing extras. Comparing then pays off twice. If you leave Germany, you can usually end the policy when you move abroad; ask the insurer which proof of the move it needs.
Questions and answers
Usually between EUR 3 and 15, depending on the scope and whether you insure yourself alone or a family.
Rarely. The extra is often EUR 10 to 30 a year, and partner and children are covered.
Often yes, if you can pay small claims yourself. The premium then drops noticeably.
New tariffs are often cheaper and cover more. You can switch at the end of the insurance year.
Yes, as other provision expenses. The maximum, however, is usually already used up by health insurance.
Sometimes for a short stay, rarely once you live here. Check the policy's rules on residence abroad, otherwise take out a German policy.
