Insurance for beauty, nail and lash salons in Germany

Your clients trust you with their face, eyes and hands. An allergic reaction to lash glue, a burn after waxing or pigment changes after laser treatment can lead to medical bills and claims for compensation. This page shows how to protect yourself, what it costs and which treatments must be named in your policy.

Insurance for beauty salons

The question almost everyone asks first

Are all my treatments automatically covered by my public liability policy?

No. What is covered is what the policy names as your activity. Classic beauty treatments, manicures and pedicures are almost always included; lash extensions, permanent make up, laser, IPL and microneedling often only for an extra premium or not at all. Hyaluronic filler injections count as medical treatment (Heilkunde) in Germany and cannot be insured for beauticians without a licence to practise. Send us your price list and we will check it against your policy.

What goes wrong in this trade

  1. 01

    Glue near the eye

Lash glue contains cyanoacrylate. Fumes and drops can irritate or injure eyes, and allergic reactions are common.

  2. 02

    Burnt and red

Wax too hot, a peel too strong, a laser set wrongly: burns and pigment changes lead to long treatment by a dermatologist.

  3. 03

    Fungus and infection

Nail extensions and foot care can pass on infections if instruments are not properly cleaned and sterilised.

  4. 04

    Expensive devices

Laser, IPL and microneedling devices easily cost five figures and are sensitive to power surges and water.

  5. 05

    The line to medical treatment

Injections, deep peels and some laser treatments are reserved for doctors or licensed alternative practitioners (Heilpraktiker). Anyone offering them anyway has no cover.

  6. 06

    Dust and fumes

Nail dust, solvents and monomer strain airways and skin. Allergies are a typical occupational disease in nail salons.

The insurance you need

Strongly advised

Business contents

Replaces couches, fittings, beauty products and stock after fire, water and burglary.

Electronic equipment

For laser, IPL, microneedling and radiofrequency devices, which become expensive after a breakdown, power surge or fall.

Depends on the business

Cyber insurance

Helps if online booking or client records containing health information are attacked.

What it costs: example prices

Beauty salons are among the businesses that are cheap to insure, as long as they offer classic treatments. The premium rises with permanent make up, laser and other devices, and with the number of therapists.

InsuranceExampleTypical range
Business liabilityBeautician or nail technician working alone, classic treatmentsabout 70 to 180 euros a year
Business liabilitySalon with three therapists, lashes and permanent make upabout 200 to 500 euros a year
Business liabilitySalon with laser, IPL and microneedlingabout 350 to 900 euros a year
Business contentsFittings and products worth 30,000 eurosabout 60 to 200 euros a year
Electronic equipmentLaser or IPL device worth 25,000 eurosabout 250 to 600 euros a year

For comparison: Public liability and contents cover for a small beauty salon cost roughly as much per year as three to five full sets of nails.

Practical tips from your broker

  1. Send your complete price list to the insurer or to us and have every treatment confirmed, especially lashes, permanent make up, laser and IPL.
  2. Choose at least 3 million euros cover for injury and property damage, and preferably 5 million for device based treatments.
  3. Keep your NiSV certificate of competence and device documents. Without them, the insurer can reduce payment after laser damage.
  4. Carry out an allergy or patch test before lashes, tinting and laser, and have clients sign the information and consent form.
  5. Make sure mobile treatments are included if you also work in clients' homes or at weddings.
  6. Insure expensive devices with electronic equipment insurance; contents insurance does not pay for a fall or an operating error.

Why NAMMERT for your business

We check treatments against the policy

Most gaps arise because a new treatment is added and nobody updates the policy. As a broker we compare several insurers against exactly your price list.

We know claims practice

In boat insurance we settle claims ourselves. After a skin reaction we know which documents the insurer needs: consent form, allergy test, photos.

Salon and private cover together

Liability, contents, devices, your income protection and your private policies all come together with us, with one contact person.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Do I need professional liability insurance as a beautician in Germany?

Not by law, but a single skin injury can cost several thousand euros. It is often sold as professional liability; at its core it is public liability that names your treatments.

What does insurance for a nail salon cost?

Public liability starts at about 70 euros a year. With fittings and business interruption, a small salon is usually between 300 and 800 euros.

Are lash extensions covered?

Not automatically. Many tariffs include them for an extra premium, some not at all. Get the inclusion confirmed in writing.

Can I offer laser and IPL?

Yes, with proof of competence under the NiSV. Some treatments, such as laser removal of tattoos and permanent make up, are reserved for doctors and cannot be insured for beauty salons.

Are hyaluronic filler injections insured?

No, if you do not have a licence to practise medicine or as a Heilpraktiker. Injections count as medical treatment, and without a licence you risk penalties and liability without insurance cover.

Who pays if I develop an allergy myself?

If it is recognised as an occupational disease, the BGW pays for treatment and retraining. Income protection insurance covers your earnings beyond that.
