A tattoo lasts a lifetime, and unfortunately so does a mistake. Infections, allergic reactions to ink, a spelling mistake in the lettering or a piercing that hits a nerve: clients then demand compensation and the cost of laser removal or a cover up. This page shows how to protect yourself and what it costs.
The question almost everyone asks first
No, if it is only a matter of taste. Public liability pays for harm to health, meaning infections, allergies and scars, and with some insurers also for the consequences of a genuine mistake such as a misspelt name. That can add up to laser treatment by a doctor, a cover up and compensation. Have the client sign off the design, spelling and placement before you start; it is your best protection.
Bacteria in the fresh wound, contaminated ink, poor hygiene: infections are the classic health claim in a studio.
Red and yellow inks in particular trigger reactions, often only weeks later. Treatment takes a long time, and sometimes the tattoo has to be removed.
Two letters swapped in a name, a mirrored design, the wrong part of the body. The client demands laser removal, a cover up and compensation.
A piercing hits a nerve, a cartilage piercing becomes badly infected. Not every policy covers piercing automatically.
Guest spots and conventions are part of everyday life, but insurance for outside artists and other locations is not.
Hours of working bent over, needlestick injuries from used needles: the work takes its toll on body and health.
Compared with other trades, 1 low to 5 high.
Essential
Covers infections, allergic reactions, scars and follow up costs such as laser treatment, provided tattooing and piercing are named in the policy.
Strongly advised
Replaces couches, machines, inks, steriliser and fittings after fire, water and burglary.
Your hands are your capital. Income protection pays if you can no longer tattoo.
Depends on the business
For tattoo machines, power supplies, autoclave and drawing tablets, which fail after a breakdown or fall.
Pays rent and lost income if the studio has to close after water damage.
For disputes over deposits, design rights and leases, and for fending off unjustified claims.
For appointment booking, your Instagram account and client data, which can be locked or leaked in an attack.
Tattoo studios pay more than hairdressers or beauty salons, because every treatment breaks the skin. What matters is the number of artists, turnover, piercing and whether guest artists or conventions are covered.
| Insurance | Example | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Business liability | Tattoo artist working alone, 3 million euros cover | about 300 to 650 euros a year |
| Business liability | Studio with three artists, piercing and guest artists | about 600 to 1,300 euros a year |
| Business contents | Fittings, machines and supplies worth 30,000 euros | about 100 to 300 euros a year |
| Occupational disability | Tattoo artist aged 30, 1,500 euros monthly benefit | about 900 to 1,800 euros a year |
For comparison: Public liability for a tattoo studio costs roughly as much per year as a medium sized tattoo with a three to four hour session.
