How much does cat health insurance cost in Germany?

In short

Surgery cover for a cat (OP-Versicherung) usually costs EUR 7 to 25 a month, full health cover (Katzenkrankenversicherung) about EUR 16 to 50. The price depends mainly on the cat's age when you sign up, its breed, the reimbursement rate and your deductible. Insure young and you pay least, with no pre-existing conditions excluded.

Worked example

One year old domestic cat that goes outdoors

The two types of cover compared over one year.

Surgery coverabout EUR 90 to 300 a year
Full coverabout EUR 200 to 600 a year
Typical accident surgeryabout EUR 1,000 to 3,000

A single operation in ten years often covers the premiums for surgery cover.

What drives the premium

The older the cat when you sign up, the higher the price. From a certain age, often around eight, many insurers no longer accept new cats.

Pedigree cats with known hereditary diseases cost more. The reimbursement rate and the multiple of the vets' fee scale the policy pays up to also move the price.

FactorEffect on the premium
Age at sign upstrong, young is cheap
Breedpedigree cats often dearer
Full or surgery coverfull cover roughly two to three times as much
Deductiblelowers the premium noticeably
Reimbursement up to four times the fee scalea little more expensive, but important

Why vet bills in Germany are high

German vets must charge according to a fixed fee scale (Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte, GOT), with a multiple of one to four times the base rate. Since the new scale of November 2022, treatment has become much more expensive. Surgery after an accident or for a swallowed object quickly costs EUR 1,000 to 3,000.

If you come from the UK or US, the idea of pet insurance will be familiar, but here the key detail is the multiple: evening, weekend and emergency visits are billed at higher rates, so a policy that pays only the single rate leaves you with a large part of the bill.

What is only covered in full cover

Common cat problems such as dental disease or kidney disease in older cats often need treatment without surgery. Only full cover pays for that.

Vaccinations and check-ups are covered only if the full cover includes a prevention budget.

When you do not need it

With savings of a few thousand euros you can carry the risk yourself. Over a cat's life of 15 years, full cover premiums add up to several thousand euros.

Surgery cover is often the sensible middle ground: a small premium, but protection against the one big bill. If you plan to leave Germany with your cat, check whether the policy covers treatment abroad and how you can cancel it.

Step by step

  1. Decide whether you want cover only for big bills or for ongoing costs too.
  2. Insure your cat as young as possible.
  3. Choose reimbursement up to four times the fee scale.
  4. Check the annual limit and the waiting period.
  5. Ask how the premium develops as the cat gets older.

Checklist

  • Reimbursement up to four times the fee scale
  • Annual limit high enough
  • Accidents covered without waiting period
  • Dental treatment clearly regulated
  • Premium increases with age known

Common mistakes

  • Waiting to insure until the cat already shows symptoms
  • Choosing a tariff with a low annual limit
  • Overlooking how the premium rises with age
