Does German personal liability insurance cover you abroad?

In short

Yes, for temporary stays it applies worldwide, including trips to your home country. Many tariffs cover stays in Europe without a time limit and outside Europe for one to five years. Almost all require your main residence to be in Germany. Rental cars, motor boats and moving abroad for good are not simply included.

Worked example

Daughter spends two years in Australia

She is still a student, covered through her parents' policy and stays registered in Germany. This is how to check the cover.

Stay24 months outside Europe
Parents' old tariffabroad only 12 months
Gap without switching12 months without liability cover
New family tariff with 5 years worldwideabout EUR 80 to 120 a year

With the new tariff the whole stay is covered, separate liability insurance abroad is not needed.

What is covered on holiday

Personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) travels with you. It pays if you damage the sink in a hotel, knock someone over while skiing or step on a stranger's phone on the beach. Good tariffs also cover damage to a rented holiday flat.

Claims are judged under the law of the country where the damage happens. That can mean higher demands than in Germany.

What is different if you come from abroad

For many newcomers the most common trip abroad is a visit home. The German policy covers you there just like any other holiday destination, as long as Germany stays your main residence.

It works the other way round too: a liability policy from your home country usually ends or loses its cover once you register your address in Germany (Anmeldung). Take out a German policy when you arrive rather than relying on the old one.

When you leave Germany for good, your German cover normally ends with the move. Arrange a policy in your new country first, then end the German one. Many insurers let you end the contract early when you move abroad permanently, usually with proof of deregistration (Abmeldung).

How long cover lasts

What matters is whether the stay is temporary. A semester abroad, work and travel or a year as an au pair is usually covered as long as you keep your residence in Germany. The allowed length is stated in the tariff.

StayUsual position
Holiday or trip home, any countrycovered
Longer stay in the EUno limit in many tariffs, otherwise one to three years
Longer stay outside Europeabout one to five years, depending on the tariff
Permanent move abroadnot covered
Rental car abroadonly with top-up cover for rental cars

Rental cars, boats and special cases

Cars are not covered by personal liability insurance. The top-up cover for rental cars (Mallorca-Deckung) only pays if the rental car's liability limit is too low and tops it up. It usually applies in Europe.

Boats are only covered to a limited extent: usually rowing boats and pedal boats, small sailing boats up to a sail area stated in the tariff and sometimes small motor boats up to a certain engine power. If you charter a yacht or own a motor boat, you need separate boat liability insurance.

In the US and Canada many tariffs count lawyers' and court fees towards the sum insured. A high sum insured is especially useful there.

When you do not need anything extra

For holidays and stays of up to a year, a current tariff is almost always enough. Extra travel liability insurance would mean paying twice. You only need to check for long stays outside Europe, rental cars and boats.

Step by step

  1. Look up the allowed length of stay for Europe and the rest of the world in your tariff.
  2. Check whether your residence in Germany continues.
  3. For rental cars, check whether top-up cover is included.
  4. For boating holidays, check the limits for sail area and engine power.
  5. If there are gaps, switch to a newer tariff before you leave.

Checklist

  • Europe without time limit or long enough
  • Worldwide at least as long as your stay
  • Damage to hotel rooms and holiday flats included
  • Top-up cover for rental cars
  • High sum insured for trips to the US or Canada

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the German policy continues after emigrating
  • Keeping a policy from your home country after moving to Germany
  • Chartering a yacht without separate liability cover
  • Buying extra travel liability insurance although your policy covers holidays

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Do I need travel liability insurance for a holiday?

Usually not. A current personal liability policy covers holidays worldwide. Travel liability only makes sense if you have no policy of your own.

Am I covered when I visit my home country?

Yes, as long as Germany is your main residence and the trip is temporary.

Am I covered during a semester abroad?

Yes, if you stay registered in Germany and the tariff allows the length of stay. Students are often covered through their parents.

What is the Mallorca-Deckung?

Top-up cover for rental cars abroad. If the rental car's liability limit is lower than usual in Germany, it pays the difference.

Does it cover sailing on holiday?

Only small boats within the limits in the tariff. Charter yachts and motor boats need separate boat liability insurance.

What happens when I leave Germany for good?

Cover normally ends with the move. Take out a policy in your new country before you end the German one.
