Are students covered by their parents' liability insurance?

In short

Usually yes, if your parents have a German family policy and you are unmarried and in your first vocational training or degree. Older contracts often end at 25 or when you move out. International students whose parents live abroad are rarely covered by a home policy in Germany and need their own. That costs about EUR 3 to 10 a month.

Worked example

International master's student in a shared flat

Anna comes from Canada and starts a two-year master's programme in Leipzig at 24. Her parents have a home policy in Canada that covers her only on short trips.

Parents' German family tariffnone
Home policy covers two years in Germanyno, according to the policy wording
Covered through her parentsno
Own single tariffabout EUR 40 to 80 a year

Anna needs her own contract. For around EUR 4 to 7 a month she has high cover, including her room in the shared flat.

What counts as first training

Insurers mean the first vocational training or the first degree after school. Voluntary service or military service in between usually does no harm, and neither do short waiting times, for example between school and university or between bachelor and master.

If you first complete an apprenticeship and then study, many newer tariffs still cover you, older ones often do not. This is exactly where your parents' policy terms are worth reading.

If your parents live abroad

German personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) is a separate policy, not part of home or renters insurance as in the US or UK. A family policy from your home country usually covers children abroad only for temporary stays. A degree of several years in Germany is often not a temporary stay, so ask your parents' insurer for a written answer or take out your own contract.

Many student residences and landlords ask for proof of liability insurance, and a German policy is the simplest way to show it. Some insurance packages for international students combine health and liability cover. The contract terms are usually in German, and the German wording counts in a claim.

When cover through German parents ends

With marriage or a registered partnership, with a second degree, when you start a permanent job and in some contracts when you move out or reach a certain age. Many tariffs extend cover for up to a year after graduation, as long as you do not have a permanent job.

Nobody tells you when this happens. The cover simply stops, and you only notice when you make a claim.

SituationCovered by the parents?
Bachelor straight after schoolyes, with a family tariff
Master straight after the bachelorusually yes
Master after two years of workusually no
Second degree after completed trainingusually no
Studying at 27, parents have an old contractoften no, check the age limit
Married while studyingno
Parents live abroad with a foreign policyrarely for a stay of several years

Parents with a single tariff

If only one parent has a single tariff, the children are not covered. This happens more often than you would think, for example after a separation. Then you need your own contract, or your parents switch to a family tariff, which usually costs only a few euros more.

When you do not need your own contract

If your parents' German family tariff expressly includes you during your first training, with no age limit you are about to pass, you do not need your own policy. Two contracts do not pay a claim twice.

Do check whether the tariff fits your life: damage in a shared flat, a semester abroad and borrowed items are often weakly covered in old contracts.

Step by step

  1. Find out whether your parents have a German family tariff or a policy abroad.
  2. In the terms, look for unmarried children in training or for rules on stays abroad.
  3. Check the age limit and the rules for waiting times and a master's degree.
  4. Check damage to rented rooms and semesters abroad.
  5. If a condition does not fit, start your own contract when the parents' cover ends or when you arrive.

Checklist

  • Parents have a family tariff, not a single tariff
  • You are unmarried and in your first training
  • No age limit you will pass soon
  • Cover also applies with your own address or in a shared flat
  • Semester abroad covered for long enough
  • Written proof available if your landlord or residence asks
  • Plan for the time after graduation

Common mistakes

  • Simply assuming that children are always covered
  • Relying on a home policy from abroad without a written confirmation
  • Not taking out your own contract after marriage or starting work
  • Treating a second degree or a master's after years of work as first training
  • Being insured twice and paying twice

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Am I still covered by my parents during my master's?

Usually yes, if the master's follows the bachelor directly. If there are years of work in between, many tariffs no longer count it as first training.

Does the cover apply if I have moved out?

In newer tariffs almost always. Older contracts sometimes require you to live in your parents' household. The terms tell you.

My parents live abroad. Does their policy cover me in Germany?

Rarely for a stay of several years. Ask their insurer for a written confirmation; if you do not get one, take out a German policy.

Am I covered in my student job?

Damage you cause at work is usually not covered by personal liability insurance. Here your employer's liability normally applies.

Do I have to report my own contract if I am also covered by my parents?

No, but there is no point in paying twice. Cancel one of the contracts at the next possible date.

Are flatmates in a shared flat covered by each other's policies?

No. Each person needs their own cover, either through their parents or with their own contract. Damage between flatmates is still often covered.
