What are type class and regional class in German car insurance?

In short

The type class (Typklasse) rates how many and how costly claims a car model causes, the regional class (Regionalklasse) does the same for the district where the keeper lives. For liability, type classes run from 10 to 25 and regional classes from 1 to 12. A model in type class 25 can cost several times as much to insure as one in class 10.

What are type class and regional class in German car insurance?

What it costs

Published class ranges and premium differences, as of September 2026.

ExampleTypical range
Liability, driver aged 30, average regional class, type class 10about EUR 250 a year
Same driver, type class 25about EUR 1,350 a year
Same calculation, driver aged 20, type class 10 and 25about EUR 710 and EUR 3,860 a year
Most expensive liability district 2027 compared with averageclaims almost 40 percent higher
Cheapest liability district 2027 compared with averageclaims about 33 percent lower

The premium examples come from a published test calculation and show the range, not your price. The figures in the worked example below are guide values from our quoting practice. How much weight an insurer gives each class is up to the insurer.

Worked example

Two cars, same driver, same town

A driver with a long no-claims record is choosing between a small car and a powerful SUV.

Small car, liability class 14, comprehensive class 17about EUR 380 to 480
SUV, liability class 20, comprehensive class 26about EUR 650 to 900
Moving to a district three regional classes higherabout 10 to 25 percent more

The model alone makes a difference of about EUR 270 to 420 a year. Guide values from our quoting practice, comprehensive cover with EUR 300 deductible.

What the type class measures

Every car model gets its own type class, separately for liability, partial and comprehensive cover. It is based on the claims that cars of this model actually caused over the last three years: how often they were involved and how expensive the repairs and injuries were.

That is why a small hatchback can sit in a high liability class if many young drivers use it, while a big estate car often sits lower because its drivers tend to be careful. Engine power alone does not decide it.

CoverClassesWhat counts
Liability (Haftpflicht)10 to 25damage drivers of this model cause to others
Partial cover (Teilkasko)10 to 33theft, glass, animals, storm and hail
Comprehensive (Vollkasko)10 to 34own accident damage plus partial cover claims

What the regional class measures

The regional class follows the registration district where the keeper lives. It compares the claims of cars registered there with the national average. Big cities are nearly always at the top, rural districts in the east and north at the bottom.

For 2027 the most expensive liability district is Offenbach, with claims almost 40 percent above average. The cheapest is Elbe-Elster in Brandenburg, about 33 percent below. For partial cover the order is quite different, because animals, hail and theft count there.

How much they move the price

The type class usually matters more than the regional class. In a published test calculation, liability for a 30 year old driver in type class 25 cost more than five times as much as in class 10. Checking type classes before you buy a car often saves more than any switch of insurer.

You can hardly influence the regional class. What counts is the keeper's main residence, not where you drive most. If you have a second home, you must state your actual main residence.

What this means if you are new to Germany

Many newcomers are surprised that the same car costs very different amounts in Munich and in a small town. This is the regional class at work, not a mistake in the quote.

If you are about to buy or lease, ask for quotes on two or three models before you sign. The type class is fixed for the model, so a cheaper model to insure stays cheaper for years, while your no-claims history builds up.

Why your classes change every year

New classes are published each late summer and apply to existing policies from the next insurance year, usually 1 January. For 2027 the regional class changed for almost ten million drivers, for most it stayed the same.

If your premium rises only because of a new type or regional class, many policies let you cancel early. The deadline is in your policy terms, usually one month after you receive the notice. If you keep your car and do not move, there is no need to check the classes every year.

Step by step

  1. Find the manufacturer code and type code in fields 2.1 and 2.2 of the registration certificate.
  2. Look up the liability and own damage type classes on the GDV website.
  3. Compare two or three models before you buy.
  4. When your premium rises, check whether a new class is the reason.
  5. If so, use the cancellation window and request quotes with the same cover.

Checklist

  • Type classes compared for all three covers, not only liability
  • Keeper's main residence stated correctly
  • New classes for next year checked
  • Special cancellation right noted if the premium rises
  • Cover matches the value of the car

Common mistakes

  • Guessing from engine power or size instead of checking the type class
  • Registering at a second home with a cheaper regional class when you do not mainly live there
  • Filing the class change letter unread and missing the cancellation deadline
  • Looking only at the liability class although own damage cover is often the bigger part

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Where do I find my car's type class?

Enter the manufacturer and type codes from your registration certificate on the GDV lookup, or check your policy schedule.

Is a high or low type class better?

Low. The lower the number, the fewer claims the model causes and the cheaper cover usually is.

Does my insurer have to use these classes?

No. The statistics are a non-binding recommendation. Most insurers use them, some deviate.

Does the regional class of my workplace count?

No, only the registration district of the keeper's residence.

Can I cancel if my type class goes up?

If your premium rises as a result, usually yes, within the period stated in your terms.

Are there type classes in other countries?

Not in this form. Austria and Spain, for example, price by engine power, value and postcode without a national class table.
