Can I transfer my no-claims class in Germany?

In short

Yes, to a spouse or registered partner, children, grandchildren and, depending on the insurer, parents or siblings. The receiver gets at most as many claim-free years as they have held a driving licence. The person giving it up loses the class for good and starts again with the next car, so it only makes sense if they will not insure a car of their own any more.

Worked example

Father gives up his car, daughter has held a licence for six years

The father is in SF 25 and stops driving. The daughter has never had a car of her own.

Father's classSF 25
Maximum transferable (six licence years)SF 6
Liability, compact car, without transfer, SF 0about EUR 550 to 700
Liability with SF 6about EUR 200 to 280

The daughter saves about EUR 350 to 420 a year. 19 of the father's years are lost, and he starts from the bottom with any new car. Calculated with guide values.

Who can transfer

There is no law on this, the rules are in your insurance terms. Almost every insurer allows transfers to spouses, registered partners, children and grandchildren. Many also accept parents, grandparents, siblings and partners living at the same address.

Some insurers require that the receiver has regularly driven the car before or lives in the same household. Both sign a declaration, usually on the insurer's own form.

The limit: your licence years

If a mother is in SF 30 and her son has held a licence for five years, he gets SF 5 at most. The remaining years are lost. They do not go back to the mother and cannot be passed to a second child.

Many insurers count years with a foreign licence, but check this in advance if your licence was issued outside Germany.

What this means if you are new to Germany

A no-claims letter from your insurer abroad may help rate your own car, but it is not a German no-claims class and cannot be passed on to family members.

If your partner has a German class and gives up their car, you can take it over like any spouse. Your own licence years set the limit.

When not to transfer

Whoever gives up the class no longer has it. If they buy a car later, they pay like a beginner. Only transfer if the giver is sure to stop driving a car of their own, for example for health or age reasons.

The transfer usually has to be requested within 6 to 12 months after the old contract ends. A class without a car is kept by many insurers for up to seven years, by some for longer.

Step by step

  1. Make sure the giver really will not insure a car of their own again.
  2. Check the receiver's licence date and work out the class they can reach.
  3. Ask the giver's insurer for the transfer form.
  4. Both sign, and the receiver hands it in with the new contract.
  5. Check the first premium notice to see if the class was applied correctly.

Checklist

  • Relationship accepted by the tariff
  • Transferable years matched to licence years
  • Deadline after the old contract ended kept
  • Giver no longer needs a car of their own
  • Second car rule compared as an alternative

Common mistakes

  • Transferring although the giver buys a car again a year later
  • Counting on the parents' full class instead of your own licence years
  • Letting the deadline after deregistration pass
  • Expecting a foreign no-claims letter to be transferable

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Can I transfer my class to my unmarried partner?

With many insurers yes, if you live together and can show it. Transfers to people outside the family who do not live with you are generally not possible.

Can I give away only some of the years?

No. The class moves as a whole. What the receiver cannot use because of their licence years is lost.

Can I get the class back?

No. Once transferred, it belongs to the receiver. You build up a new class.

Is this possible after a death in the family?

Yes, relatives can take over the class of someone who has died if they keep using the car. The insurer usually asks for the death certificate.

Does the receiver need the same insurer?

No. The giver signs the declaration, and the new insurer requests confirmation from the old one.
