Which insurance helps when an account is hacked

For a hijacked profile the right product in Germany is personal cyber insurance (Cyberversicherung). In 2024 the consumer testing body Stiftung Warentest checked 20 tariffs: 18 try to have harmful or misused content deleted, 11 search the internet for misuse of your data. None promises success.

If the hacker posts in your name, tariffs with legal cover pay a lawyer to act against them. Other policies only help at the edges: some contents policies pay after phishing, and many personal liability policies pay if you pass on malware without meaning to.

What no insurance can do

Whether you get the account back is decided by the platform alone. A policy can pay experts and add pressure, but it cannot force access.

Be careful with services that promise quick recovery for a fee paid up front. Never give them your login details. The free route through the platform's help pages is slower, but it is the safe one.

First steps before you call the insurer

If you can still log in, change the password at once, log out all other sessions and check whether the email address or phone number was changed. Change every other account that uses the same password. If you are locked out, use the forgotten password function and then the platform support.

Warn friends and family so nobody sends money. Take screenshots and report the crime through the online police service (Onlinewache) of your federal state. Then switch on two-factor login. If a virus scanner finds malware, remove it first.

When you do not need your own policy

If you use the account privately, have two-factor login switched on and already hold legal expenses insurance, the free steps are usually enough after a hack.

A cyber policy makes more sense if a lot depends on your profile: reach, photos of your children or income. For an account that earns money, check whether the tariff covers business use at all.

Step by step

  1. Change the password at once and end all other sessions.
  2. Locked out: reset the password, then contact the platform support.
  3. Warn friends and family about messages from the account.
  4. Take screenshots and report the crime through the online police service.
  5. Tell the cyber insurer before you hire anyone yourself.
  6. Switch on two-factor login and change other accounts with the same password.
