Do I need cyber insurance for my company in Germany?

In short
No, it does not replace it. Personal cyber insurance in Germany costs about EUR 7 to 212 a year and pays for fraud, data theft and online bullying, with lawyer costs only for internet disputes. Legal expenses insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung) also covers disputes with your employer, landlord or after an accident; private cover alone starts at about EUR 69 a year.
What both contracts cost in Germany, guide figures from published tests and comparisons.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Personal cyber insurance, single person, all tested policies | about EUR 7 to 212 a year |
| Cyber insurance with legal cover, single or family | about EUR 127 to 149 a year |
| Legal expenses insurance, private module only | from about EUR 5.73 a month, around EUR 69 a year |
| Legal expenses with private, job, traffic and tenancy | from about EUR 11.92 a month, around EUR 143 a year |
| First consultation with a lawyer without insurance | at most EUR 190 plus VAT |
Guide figures as of October 2026; the cyber insurance test dates from 2024, the legal expenses prices from 2026 calculation examples.
The cap on initial consultations follows from § 34 of the Lawyers' Remuneration Act (RVG).
That many legal expenses policies cover removal and injunctions after online insults only partly is a guide value from our quoting practice, as are the amounts in the example.
Your premium depends on scope, age and excess; we obtain the exact quote.
Worked example
She is thinking of cancelling her legal expenses insurance and taking cyber insurance with legal cover instead.
| Legal expenses with private, job, traffic and tenancy | from about EUR 143 a year |
| Cyber insurance with legal cover instead | about EUR 127 to 149 a year |
| What she loses by switching | work, tenancy and traffic |
| Unfair dismissal claim at first instance without insurance | often several thousand euros |
| Basic cyber insurance on top of legal cover | from about EUR 42 a year |
The switch saves hardly anything and removes cover for dismissal and tenancy disputes. Better: keep the legal expenses insurance and add an inexpensive cyber policy for fraud and data theft only if needed.
Legal expenses insurance pays for lawyers, courts and experts when you need to enforce your rights or defend yourself. It never replaces money you have lost; it only pays for the attempt to get it back.
Personal cyber insurance deals with what happens online. Depending on the policy it refunds fraud losses up to a limit, recovers data after malware, has offensive content removed and offers advice on online bullying. Some policies include lawyer costs, but only for disputes connected with the internet.
| Situation | Cyber insurance | Legal expenses insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Paid for goods that never arrived | refunds the amount up to a limit, depending on the policy | lawyer against the seller, no refund |
| Someone orders in your name | help sorting it out, often with a lawyer | lawyer to fight off claims |
| Insults or exposure online | removal, advice, lawyer in policies with legal cover | depends on the terms, often limited |
| Warning letter over shared films or music | included in some policies | often excluded, sometimes initial advice only |
| Data lost after a virus | data recovery, depending on the policy | no |
| Dismissal by your employer | no | yes, with the employment module |
| Dispute over service charges or a rent increase | no | yes, with the tenancy module |
| Fine or accident on the road | no | yes, with the traffic module |
The overlap is disputes about buying online. The private module of legal expenses insurance covers contract disputes whether you bought in a shop or online. If you have it, you do not need cyber insurance just to take on an online retailer.
The other way round, a lawyer does little good after fraud if the scammer cannot be traced. The money is gone, and only cyber insurance with a cash benefit refunds it, up to its limit.
Many policies exclude copyright disputes, which is exactly the warning letter over a shared film or photo. Some pay only for initial advice, in one set of terms we have seen up to EUR 200 a year.
For insults and damage to your reputation online it depends on the policy. Damages claims are often covered, getting content taken down not always. Help with removal, psychological support and searching for stolen data are not part of legal expenses cover.
If you mainly wanted legal cover for trouble with online shopping, are not employed or see little risk of a dispute at work, and neither rent nor a car is an issue for you. Then cyber insurance with legal cover for EUR 127 to 149 a year covers the part that affects you.
For everyone else, the expensive disputes in life are dismissal, tenancy and accidents, and cyber insurance does not help with any of them. If you work and rent, do not swap legal expenses cover for a cyber policy.
If you only pay online by direct debit, credit card or with buyer protection, you can usually get money back through your bank after fraud. A first consultation with a German lawyer costs consumers at most EUR 190 plus VAT, which many people can pay themselves.
Consumer advice centres tend to advise against cyber policies because the benefits are often tightly capped. Check your contents and personal liability insurance first, as online banking and passing on viruses are sometimes already included.
Questions and answers
It pays the lawyer if you take action against the seller, and with the private module usually regardless of whether you bought online or offline. It does not replace the lost money.
Only if you want cash after fraud, data recovery or help getting content removed. For disputes with online shops your legal cover is enough.
Often not. Many policies exclude copyright and pay initial advice at most. Check the exact wording.
Cyber insurance offers removal help and advice, and with legal cover a lawyer too. Standard legal expenses insurance may help with damages depending on the terms, but not with removal.
Yes, some better policies include benefits for online risks. Then an extra cyber policy is often unnecessary.
That depends on the policy. For legal expenses cover three months are usual for contract disputes; check the cyber terms before signing.
