How much does personal cyber insurance cost in Germany?

In short

How much does personal cyber insurance cost in Germany? Basic tariffs start at about EUR 45 a year; tariffs that pay out for online fraud and include legal cover usually cost EUR 125 to 160. A family pays only a few euros more than a single person. What matters most is not the price but how much the tariff actually pays per fraud case.

Worked example

Couple with two children, buying and selling online

The family has no legal expenses insurance and sells children's things on classified ads sites. They compare Basic and Comfort over five years.

Basic tariff for the family, five yearsabout EUR 265
Comfort tariff for the family, five yearsabout EUR 805
One fraud case: pram paid by transfer, never deliveredabout EUR 600
Paid by the Basic tariffoften advice only, no money
Paid by the Comfort tariffup to EUR 3,000 per case, minus any excess

Comfort costs about EUR 540 more over five years. It pays off if one or two larger fraud cases happen in that time. If the family mostly pays with buyer protection, Basic or no policy at all is enough.

What drives the price

Unlike contents or car insurance, where you live and how old you are hardly matter. The premium depends almost entirely on the tariff: does it pay money after fraud, is legal cover included, and who in your household is insured?

The cheapest tariffs mainly offer a phone hotline, data recovery and help removing content from the internet. If you want your money back when a fake shop never delivers, you need a higher tariff.

Tariff levelSingle, per yearFamily, per yearWhat is usually included
Basicabout EUR 45about EUR 53advice, data recovery, help with cyberbullying
Comfortabout EUR 137about EUR 161plus money after online fraud up to a limit per case
Premiumabout EUR 229about EUR 269plus cover for devices
With legal coverabout EUR 127about EUR 149lawyer and court costs in online disputes

Limits matter more than the price

A EUR 60 tariff with a EUR 15,000 sum insured sounds better than a EUR 137 tariff with EUR 3,000 per case. But the large sum often covers everything together, while online shopping fraud has its own, much smaller limit.

So check first: how much does the tariff pay if ordered goods never arrive? Does that also apply when you sell on classified ads sites? And how much do you get if someone misuses your online banking?

What is different if you are new to Germany

In Germany many private sales and small shops still ask for a bank transfer. A transfer you made yourself is very hard to reverse, unlike a card payment. That is exactly the gap a good cyber tariff closes.

German policy documents and claims forms are usually in German. Ask before signing whether the hotline also helps in English, and keep screenshots of every order and chat, because the insurer will ask for them.

When to save your money

If you already have legal expenses insurance and a contents policy with an online banking add-on, you pay twice for many benefits. If you pay online almost only by direct debit, credit card or with buyer protection, you can often get your money back without insurance.

The policy makes most sense if you often pay by transfer, sell a lot privately, have children online or have no legal cover. It does not cover devices or data used for work; self-employed people need a business cyber policy.

Step by step

  1. Check what your legal expenses, contents and liability policies already cover.
  2. Decide whether you want money after fraud or only help in an emergency.
  3. Compare the limit per fraud case with your largest online purchases.
  4. Compare single and family tariffs if your children are online.
  5. Look at the excess and the contract term; cancellable every year is ideal.

Checklist

  • Limit per case for purchase fraud stated and high enough
  • Fraud when selling included if you sell privately
  • Misuse of online banking and credit card covered
  • Everyone in the household insured
  • No overlap with existing legal expenses insurance
  • Excess known

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the cheapest tariff and finding out after a loss that it pays no money
  • Looking only at the sum insured instead of the limit per fraud case
  • Paying for legal cover twice
  • Trying to protect work devices under a personal policy

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

How much is personal cyber insurance per month?

Basic tariffs from about EUR 3.75, tariffs that pay out after fraud about EUR 11 to 14 a month.

Is the family tariff much more expensive?

No. For everyone in the household you usually pay only a few euros a year more than alone.

Why is the range in the test so wide?

The cheapest tariffs offer little more than advice, the most expensive include legal or device cover. The price says little until you compare the benefits.

Can I deduct it from my taxes?

Usually not for private use. Ask a tax adviser if you also use your devices for work.

Is there an excess?

Depends on the tariff. Some pay from the first euro, others deduct EUR 150 per claim.

Is it worth it if I only pay with buyer protection?

Hardly for purchase fraud. It can still help with identity theft or cyberbullying.
