Is personal cyber insurance worth it in Germany?

In short

For many people no, for some very much so. Personal cyber insurance in Germany costs about EUR 42 to 150 a year. It pays off mainly if you buy and sell a lot online and have no legal expenses insurance. Before you sign, check what your contents, personal liability and legal expenses policies already cover.

Worked example

Family that buys and sells online regularly, no legal expenses cover

Five years of premiums against a single fraud case.

Family premiumabout EUR 60 a year
Five yearsabout EUR 300
Used e-bike paid by bank transfer, never deliveredabout EUR 1,200
Lawyer after orders placed in your nameabout EUR 300 to 800

One case can exceed five years of premiums. Without such transactions the policy usually goes unused.

What the policy does when things go wrong

You pay in advance for a used bike on a classifieds site and the seller disappears. Or someone opens a shopping account with your details and orders goods in your name. A cyber policy pays the loss up to the agreed limit or helps you clean up the consequences.

Many tariffs add a helpline, help with removing insulting content online, data recovery after malware and a lawyer if you take action against the fraudster.

What you may already be covered for

Many of these benefits exist in other policies. If you do not check, you pay twice. Also note that under German payment law your bank must usually refund payments you did not authorise, unless you acted with gross negligence.

The other way round: if you have none of these add-ons, a cyber policy closes several gaps at once for little money.

RiskWhere else it may be covered
Money lost through a fake banking sitecontents insurance with an online banking add-on, only in some tariffs
You unknowingly spread a viruspersonal liability, if data damage is included
Dispute with an online shoplegal expenses insurance with contract law
Goods paid for, never deliveredusually only in a cyber policy
Insults or exposure onlineusually only in a cyber policy

What is different if you come from abroad

Some credit cards and banks in other countries include identity theft support. German current accounts rarely do, so do not assume your old protection still applies after you move.

Terms and claims handling are usually in German, and many German online frauds run through classifieds and fake parcel messages. Ask us when a clause is unclear before you rely on it.

When it is not worth it

If you rarely buy online, pay by invoice or with buyer protection and have legal expenses cover, there is little left for a cyber policy to do.

It also does not replace caution. If you reuse passwords, skip updates or give a TAN over the phone, expect reduced payouts or refusal.

Step by step

  1. Check your contents, liability and legal expenses policies for online add-ons.
  2. Think about how often you pay in advance or sell on classifieds sites.
  3. Insure only the gaps that remain.
  4. Compare tariffs with the same limit per claim and the same deductible.
  5. Set up two-factor login and a separate password for every account.

Checklist

  • Fraud when buying and when selling included
  • Limit per claim high enough for your largest online purchases
  • Identity theft including lawyer's fees
  • Cyberbullying support for everyone in the household
  • No overlap with your contents or legal expenses policy

Common mistakes

  • Buying cyber cover although legal expenses and contents insurance already cover most of it
  • Looking only at the price and choosing a tariff without cash benefits for fraud
  • Ignoring the duties in the policy, such as current updates and secure passwords
  • Not reporting the loss to the police and your bank straight away

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

Does it pay if I fall for a phishing email?

Often yes, if the tariff includes online banking. Your bank is usually asked first. Grossly negligent behaviour, such as giving a TAN on the phone, can reduce the payout.

Is my family covered?

In family tariffs yes, usually everyone in the same household. The surcharge over a single tariff is small.

Does it help if my child is bullied online?

Many tariffs pay for counselling, removing content and a lawyer. Check the limits for this in the tariff.

Can I get a policy in English?

Some insurers offer English service, most documents are German. The German wording applies in a claim.

Does contents insurance cover online fraud?

Only with a separate add-on, and usually only for online banking. Goods that never arrive are normally not covered there.

Am I covered as a freelancer?

No. Devices and data used for work need commercial cyber insurance.
