Golf insurance in Germany: liability, equipment and the hole-in-one round
A sliced drive can hit a playing partner, a car in the club car park or a window next to the course, and you are personally liable for the damage. Since 2022, adult members of German golf clubs are no longer insured automatically through the national federation. That makes your own personal liability policy the first thing to check. Golf insurance adds cover for your equipment and the hole-in-one tradition.
There is no legal requirement. The key protection is a German personal liability policy (Privathaftpflicht) that includes golf without restrictions. Check the terms, because some contracts exclude damage caused by stray balls. Separate golf insurance is mainly worth it for valuable equipment, broken clubs and theft, and for the hole-in-one round, which no liability policy pays.
Start with personal liability: it carries the big risk
If your ball injures someone, the claim quickly covers medical costs, compensation for pain and suffering and lost earnings. Liability insurance pays this, and in many cases the personal liability policy you already have is enough. It must include golf without exclusions, including damage from stray balls. If the terms are silent, ask the insurer to confirm in writing.
Choose a sum insured of several million euros. Personal injury is the expensive case, and a ball hitting someone's head at close range can have lasting consequences.
The 2022 change at the German Golf Federation
Until the end of 2021, every member of a club in the Deutscher Golf Verband (DGV) was automatically covered for liability while playing. Since 1 January 2022 this only applies to minors, taster courses and trial members. Adults have to arrange their own cover.
The federation created DGV-GolfProtect with HanseMerkur to close the gap. Members join by giving HanseMerkur marketing consent or paying a small fee. According to the 2023 summary, it covers EUR 5 million with a EUR 250 deductible and only pays after your own personal liability policy.
Equipment: why household contents insurance often falls short
German household contents insurance (Hausrat) mainly protects belongings at home. Outside the home, in the car or in the clubhouse, limits are tighter and simple theft is often not covered. A golf bag in the boot is a classic gap.
Golf equipment insurance covers clubs, bag, trolley and, depending on the policy, a GPS watch or electric trolley against theft, burglary, fire and breakage. Insure at replacement value. Losing or leaving items behind is almost always excluded.
Golf carts: a question for motor cover and the club
German personal liability policies generally exclude the use of vehicles. Whether a golf cart counts depends on the vehicle and the policy wording. If you own a cart or drive it beyond the course, clarify this first.
For rented carts, ask the club office how the vehicle is insured and who pays for damage to the cart itself.
What is covered
Injury and property damage to others caused by ball or club
Defence against unjustified claims
Damage to other people's cars and buildings next to the course
Theft and burglary of equipment, if agreed
Club breakage during play, if agreed
Hole-in-one round up to the agreed limit
Golf trips abroad, depending on territorial scope
What is not covered
Losing or leaving equipment behind
Wear and tear, such as worn grips and club faces
Golf cart accidents under personal liability, depending on the policy
Your own injuries, which need accident insurance
Professional work as a golf teacher or tour player
Hole-in-one costs above the agreed maximum
Who needs it
Adult club members without a personal liability policy that clearly includes golf
Golfers with equipment that would hurt to replace
Anyone who often leaves the bag in the car or flies with it
Competition players who want the hole-in-one round covered
Who does not need it
Separate golf liability, if your personal liability policy covers golf without exclusions and with a high sum insured
Wheel of misfortune
Spin the wheel of bad luck
Six things that really happen. The wheel picks yours and shows who pays.
Cost:
Budget policy Strong policy
See all six cases
Ball hits a playing partner, treatment, pain and suffering, lost earnings. Budget policy: pays, Strong policy: pays. This is the core of every golf liability cover, provided your contract does not exclude golf or stray balls.
Ball smashes a windscreen, glass and fitting for someone else's car. Budget policy: pays, Strong policy: pays. Liability also pays property damage to others. Cars parked next to the course make this a realistic case.
Shaft snaps on the tee, price of a new club. Budget policy: does not pay, Strong policy: pays. Liability never pays for your own equipment. Only an agreed club breakage module replaces the club.
Bag stolen from the car boot, full set of clubs plus bag. Budget policy: does not pay, Strong policy: pays in part. Household contents insurance often refuses here. Strong golf policies include theft from a car, usually with conditions and a deductible.
Hole-in-one at the club event, a round for everyone in the clubhouse. Budget policy: does not pay, Strong policy: pays in part. The policy pays up to the agreed limit. Anything above it stays with the lucky player.
Club left behind in the bar, price of a new club. Budget policy: does not pay, Strong policy: does not pay. Losing or leaving items behind is almost always excluded from equipment cover. Theft is insured, forgetfulness is not.
What it costs
Golf cover is usually inexpensive. The liability part is often already included in personal liability, while the equipment premium depends on the value of clubs, bag and trolley.
What drives the premium
Sum insured for equipment at replacement value
Modules: liability, equipment, club breakage, hole-in-one
Theft from the car included or not
Territory: Germany, Europe or worldwide
Deductible
We do not quote ranges, because golf policies are put together very differently and reliable comparison figures are lacking. Your premium is only fixed in the quote.
