In short
With a few claim-free years you usually pay about EUR 70 to 350 a year for motorcycle liability cover in Germany, about EUR 100 to 450 with partial cover and about EUR 180 to 750 with comprehensive cover. A 125cc bike sits at the low end, a superbike at the top. New riders often pay EUR 300 to 700 for liability plus partial cover.
Published example premiums for Germany, 2026, per year.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| 125cc, experienced rider, liability | about EUR 50 to 120 |
| Mid-size naked bike around 700cc, liability, partial, comprehensive | about EUR 180, 250 and 400 |
| Large adventure tourer, liability, partial, comprehensive | about EUR 220, 320 and 550 |
| 1,000cc superbike, liability up to comprehensive | about EUR 350 to 750 |
| New rider, A2 licence, no-claims class 0, liability and partial cover | about EUR 320 to 550 |

Worked example
This is how the premium adds up for a bike ridden from March to October and kept in a garage.
| Liability, EUR 100 million flat sum | about EUR 90 to 150 |
| Partial cover with EUR 150 deductible | about EUR 40 to 80 |
| Seasonal plate March to October | about a quarter less |
| Vehicle tax, season only | about EUR 30 |
Together about EUR 130 to 230 a year for insurance plus about EUR 30 tax. Without recognised history the same bike can cost much more.
The bike matters most: engine size, power and its type class, a rating of how often and how expensively a model is involved in claims. Two bikes with the same power can therefore cost quite different amounts.
Your age, your no-claims class for motorcycles, your address and whether the bike is kept in a garage overnight also count. Motorcycles have their own no-claims class, so claim-free years with a car do not automatically carry over.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Engine size, power and type class | strong, a superbike costs several times a 125cc |
| Motorcycle no-claims class | strong, beginners pay the full rate |
| Rider under 25 | clear surcharge |
| Address | noticeable, cities usually cost more |
| Seasonal plate (Saisonkennzeichen) | lower, you only pay for the season |
| Garage and deductible | lower the own-damage part |
Riding history from your home country is not recognised automatically. Some insurers will take a no-claims letter from your previous insurer into account, ideally in English or German and listing the claim-free years on a motorcycle. Ask before you sign, because each insurer decides for itself.
A licence from outside the EU is usually valid for six months after you take up residence. After that you need a German licence. Tell the insurer which licence you hold and since when you have held the motorcycle category.
Liability pays for damage you cause to others. Partial cover pays mainly for theft, fire, storm, hail and collisions with animals. Motorcycles are stolen often, so partial cover makes sense for almost any bike with real value.
Comprehensive cover also pays when you fall or cause an accident yourself. It is worth it for new, financed or expensive bikes. For a bike worth only a few thousand euros it rarely pays off: a few years of extra premium eat up what you could get back.
With a seasonal plate you only pay insurance and tax for the months the bike is registered. Outside the season you may not ride at all, not even on a sunny day in February.
The legal minimum for liability is EUR 7.5 million for personal injury. After a serious accident this is not always enough, so choose EUR 100 million as a flat sum. Cheap policies often limit cover for helmet and protective clothing.
Questions and answers
For experienced riders about EUR 6 to 30 for liability, up to about EUR 60 with comprehensive cover. New riders pay much more.
Not automatically. Motorcycles have their own class. Some insurers rate a bike as a second vehicle more favourably if you have a long clean record with your car.
With an A1 licence and no-claims class 0, about EUR 180 to 350 a year for liability and partial cover.
Usually not. Partial cover can still be worth it because of theft, if you could not easily replace the bike.
Yes, if you are sure you will not ride in winter. You save insurance and tax for the months without registration.
