Collision

Boat insurance term, area: Hull

A collision is any impact between your boat and another vessel, a fixed object such as a pontoon, pile or buoy, or something floating such as driftwood. Insurers treat it as two separate losses. Damage to your own boat falls under hull cover, normally whoever was at fault. Damage to the other boat falls under liability cover, and only if you are legally liable. Example: a gust pushes a yacht onto her neighbour while berthing, and both hulls are scraped.

What to check: Two questions for your own policy: is collision with fixed or floating objects named as an insured event under hull cover, or only on a full cover option? And does a collision count against any no claims bonus when the other side was at fault?
