How much do crowns, bridges and implants cost in Germany, and what does public insurance pay?

In short

A crown usually costs EUR 400 to 1,000, a bridge EUR 900 to 2,000 and an implant with crown EUR 2,000 to 4,500 per tooth. Public health insurance only pays a fixed subsidy towards the simplest solution: 60 percent of it, or 70 or 75 percent with a bonus booklet. For a crown that is about EUR 239 to 299 in 2026, you pay the rest.

How much do crowns, bridges and implants cost in Germany, and what does public insurance pay?

What it costs

Total costs and fixed subsidies of public health insurance, 2026.

ExampleTypical range
Metal crown on a back tooth, standard treatmentabout EUR 400 in total, subsidy EUR 239 to 299
Three-unit bridge, standard treatmentabout EUR 920 in total, subsidy EUR 553 to 691
Full upper denturesubsidy about EUR 576 to 721
Implant with crown, per toothabout EUR 2,000 to 4,500

As of September 2026. Costs for ceramics and implants vary a lot by practice and lab; the own shares for ceramic work are guide values from our quoting practice. Your treatment and cost plan is what counts.

Worked example

Implant instead of a bridge, ten years of bonus booklet

A molar is missing. The standard treatment would be a bridge, you choose an implant.

Implant with crown according to the treatment planEUR 3,000
Fixed subsidy for the gap at 75 percentabout EUR 691
Own share without supplementary coverabout EUR 2,309
Supplementary tariff with 90 percent total reimbursementpays about EUR 2,009

With a good supplementary tariff about EUR 300 remains with you, without one around EUR 2,300. This only applies if the policy existed before the diagnosis and the limits of the first years do not apply. As a newcomer at 60 percent your own share would be around EUR 140 higher.

How public insurance calculates

Statutory health insurance (GKV) does not pay for a material or method, but for your diagnosis. For each diagnosis a simple standard solution is defined, the standard treatment (Regelversorgung). You get a fixed amount towards it, the fixed subsidy (Festzuschuss).

If you choose something better, such as a white ceramic crown instead of metal or an implant instead of a bridge, the subsidy stays the same. You pay the extra cost in full.

The subsidies rise slightly every year. On 1 January 2026 they went up by just over 4 percent.

What treatment costs and what is left for you

The table shows typical total costs and your share without a bonus booklet. The ranges are wide because lab work, material and region move the price a lot.

What the bonus booklet brings

If you go for a check-up every year and have it stamped in your bonus booklet, you get 70 percent after five years without gaps and 75 percent after ten years. For a bridge that is around EUR 140 more.

Newcomers to Germany start with an empty booklet and therefore at 60 percent. Ask your dentist for a booklet at your first check-up. If you miss a year, counting starts again. Many funds allow one gap in ten years, ask yours.

Treatment in your home country

Dental work can be cheaper abroad. Within the EU the fixed subsidy can be paid if your fund approved the treatment and cost plan (Heil- und Kostenplan) before treatment. Outside the EU the German fund usually pays nothing for planned dental work.

Follow-up work and complaints are harder from a distance. Clarify with your fund in advance what it needs, and keep all bills and the plan in a translated form if they are not in German or English.

Hardship cases

With a low income, for example when receiving citizens' income (Bürgergeld), basic income support or student grants (BAföG), the fund pays the standard treatment in full. You still pay the extra cost of better solutions yourself.

You apply to your fund, ideally together with the treatment and cost plan.

When supplementary cover helps and when it does not

Supplementary dental insurance (Zahnzusatzversicherung) is worth it if you want implants or ceramics and no treatment has been recommended yet. Good tariffs reimburse 80 to 100 percent together with the public subsidy.

It makes no sense if the dentist has already planned the treatment, because then no tariff pays. If you only want the simple standard treatment, your own share is often lower than the premiums over the years.

Step by step

  1. Ask your dentist for a treatment and cost plan (Heil- und Kostenplan).
  2. Submit the plan to your public fund and have the subsidy confirmed.
  3. Enclose your bonus booklet so that 70 or 75 percent is applied.
  4. If your share is high, get a second opinion or a second quote.
  5. Only start treatment after the fund has approved the plan.

Checklist

  • Written treatment and cost plan in hand
  • Fund approved the plan before treatment starts
  • Bonus booklet complete and enclosed
  • Hardship case checked if your income is low
  • Lab costs listed separately in the plan
  • Supplementary insurer asked in advance whether and how much it pays

Common mistakes

  • Starting treatment before the fund has approved the plan
  • Forgetting the bonus booklet and giving up to 15 percentage points of subsidy
  • Taking out supplementary cover after the diagnosis and hoping for reimbursement
  • Looking only at the total price without asking what it includes

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

What does public insurance pay for an implant?

Only the fixed subsidy you would get for a bridge. You pay for the surgery and the implant itself.

How long is the treatment plan valid?

Usually six months from approval by the fund. If you start later, you have to submit it again.

Does public insurance pay for a ceramic crown?

Only the subsidy for a metal crown. For visible front teeth a tooth-coloured facing is often part of the standard treatment, for back teeth it is not.

Can I pay in instalments?

Many practices offer instalments through billing companies. Ask for the effective interest rate, it is not always zero.

Can I use the bonus booklet from my home country?

No, only check-ups documented in a German bonus booklet count. Start one at your first check-up in Germany.

Is supplementary dental cover worth it just for crowns and implants?

For implants and ceramics usually yes, if you sign while healthy. For the plain standard treatment often not.
