In short
Who pays for a fire brigade call-out in Germany depends on why it came. Putting out a real fire and rescuing people in danger is normally paid by the municipality, so you pay nothing. You can get a bill for intent, gross negligence, repeated false alarms and some technical help. Such fee notices range from a few hundred to over EUR 1,700.
Amounts from court cases and published fee rates.
| Example | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Hot fireplace ash in an organic waste bin, Hesse | around EUR 1,700 |
| False alarm from a barbecue fire, Rhineland Palatinate | around EUR 1,467 |
| Traffic accident with damage to a house wall | around EUR 510 plus EUR 217 for the equipment truck |
| False alarm from a home smoke detector, Saxony | around EUR 2,523 demanded, overturned in court |
| Fee rate for a fire engine in Berlin | EUR 4.70 per minute |
As of October 2026, from court reports and published fee rates.
The damage amounts in the worked example are guide values from day-to-day quoting practice.
We check for you whether your policy reimburses a fee notice.
Worked example
The owner tips still warm ash into the bin. At night the bin and the carport burn, and the fire brigade puts out the fire.
| Municipal fee notice for gross negligence | about EUR 1,500 to 2,000 |
| Damage to the carport | about EUR 6,000 to 9,000 |
| Carport included in the buildings insurance | yes |
| Gross negligence included in the policy | yes |
The insurance pays for the carport despite the mistake. The owner has to pay the municipal fee first; whether the insurer reimburses it depends on the policy. Calculation with guide values.
In Germany, firefighting, help in natural disasters and rescuing people from acute danger are public tasks. The fire brigade (Feuerwehr) normally sends no bill for them, whether you own or rent your home and whatever your nationality.
If you call 112 in good faith because you see smoke, you do not pay either, even if it turns out to be harmless. In an emergency, worrying about a bill should never make you wait.
Municipalities may charge if someone caused the call-out on purpose or through gross negligence. Courts have accepted this for hot fireplace ash put in an organic waste bin, with a fee of around EUR 1,700.
False alarms often cost money too, especially from fire alarm systems (Brandmeldeanlagen) connected directly to the control centre. Help without acute danger, such as opening a door or rescuing an animal, has its own fees depending on the municipality.
| Situation | Who usually pays |
|---|---|
| Flat fire caused by a faulty appliance | the municipality |
| Fire from a pan left on the stove | usually the municipality, courts decide differently |
| Hot ash in the bin | you, because of gross negligence |
| False alarm from a fire alarm system | the operator of the system |
| False alarm from a home smoke detector | depends on the state, in Saxony not the owner after a 2026 ruling |
| Deliberate false emergency call | the caller, who also faces criminal charges |
Buildings insurance (Wohngebäudeversicherung) pays for damage to the house caused by fire, smoke, soot and water used to put out the fire, including clearing up and making the site safe. It does not reimburse the fire brigade's work if that work is free as a public service.
Costs you incur yourself to limit the damage count as insured expenses. Whether a municipal fee notice falls under this varies between policies, so ask your insurer before you pay. If you rent, the landlord's buildings insurance covers the building and your contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) covers your belongings.
If the fire brigade breaks open your door after a false alarm, some contents policies pay for damage to the door and your belongings up to a limit, depending on the level EUR 5,000 or 30,000.
A beeping home smoke detector is not a fire alarm system. On 20 May 2026 the Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen ruled that municipalities in Saxony may not charge for such call-outs (case 5 C 5/25). The city had demanded around EUR 2,523.
Other states may handle this differently, because each has its own fire service law. After a first false alarm the municipality often bears the cost itself. If false alarms keep happening because of a faulty detector, the landlord may be responsible.
If your home catches fire and you did not act with gross negligence, the call-out normally costs you nothing. You do not need a separate insurance just for fire brigade costs.
What matters is buildings insurance that includes gross negligence, if you own, and contents insurance with the same feature, if you rent. Then the actual fire damage stays covered even after a mistake.
