Chaparral Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Chaparral, based in Georgia, builds bowriders and sports boats in large series, in recent years with a strong focus on surf models: ballast tanks, trim tabs and wake systems that create a shapeable wave. In insurance terms these models are a class of their own. Wakesurfing means people in the water, directly behind the boat, with the engine running. Personal injury arising from this use falls under the boat third-party liability, and the limit of indemnity should not be the smallest one here.
The second point is the ballast system itself. Chaparral surf models take several hundred litres of water into tanks inside the hull. Leaks, defective pumps and frost damage to the lines are typical loss patterns, especially when the boat goes into winter storage without being drained completely. We cover frost damage when the boat has been properly winterised, and leaving water standing in the ballast tanks is not that.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are wakesurfing and water skiing behind my Chaparral insured?
Yes, for Chaparral too: sporting use with water skis, wakeboard and surfboard is included.
Pay attention to the limit of indemnity of the third-party liability:
people in the water behind the boat are the biggest risk of this use, not the boat itself.

For the Chaparral 187 / 200 (classic) by Chaparral series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Chaparral 180 / 215 SL, SS und LTD, Signature 24 / 29 / 31,
Signature 240 / 270 / 310 / 330 by Chaparral and 2 more series the market value and the
replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
As the SSi 19 / 21 / 23 (Bowrider), SSi 25 / 27 (Bowrider),
SSX 25 / 28 (Sportboot) by Chaparral and 4 more series are still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Chaparral 187 / 200 (classic), Chaparral 180 / 215 SL, SS und LTD,
SSi 19 / 21 / 23 (Bowrider) by Chaparral and further series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Signature 24 / 29 / 31, Signature 240 / 270 / 310 / 330,
OSX 30 / 34 Luxury Tender by Chaparral and further series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
