Worth knowing
Yamaha Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Yamaha mostly sells inflatable boats and RIBs as a package with its own outboards, from small YAM boats to larger console boats. For insurance the package is convenient, because boat and engine share one invoice and therefore an undisputed proof of value. List them separately in the application all the same: the engine is the more exposed item and needs its own number in the policy.
Yamaha outboards are among the most frequently stolen boat engines in Europe. Our full hull cover covers engine theft including theft of the engine alone from the boat, which is the more common case in practice. A mechanical lock on the transom bracket, the engine number in the policy and a berth with access control measurably reduce the risk; all three are part of prevention, not of the policy.
On boats with a Yamaha jet drive, the Sport Boats, one point is special: the impeller takes up intake damage when the boat runs in shallow or weedy water. Damage of this kind is operational damage, not an insured event. Consequential damage to the drive in the event of grounding or collision is covered. In shallow water keep an eye on the intake area; on jet drives it is the most sensitive part of the boat.
The sport boats run as SR, SX and AR with a number for the length in feet, so the SR 210 is a 21-foot boat with a twin jet drive. What counts for the premium is value, year of construction and the combined output of both engines, not the model designation. Because these boats are almost always trailered, the trailer value belongs in the application; it is then included in the boat insurance at no extra premium, together with cover during transport, launching and craning. Yamaha jet skis are not listed here but on the Yamaha WaveRunner page.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Do you insure the Yamaha SR 210 and the other sport boats?
Yes, the jet boats of the SR, SX and AR ranges as well as the YAM inflatable boats. What matters is value, year of construction, combined output and cruising range, not the model designation.
Is engine theft covered?
Yes, under full hull cover including theft of the engine alone. The engine number in the policy and a mechanical lock are prerequisites for smooth handling.
Is impeller damage on the jet drive insured?
Intake damage in shallow water is operational damage and is not covered. Consequential damage to the drive after grounding or collision is insured under full hull cover.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
Even without an engine the rule holds: a tear from impact or vandalism is covered, UV ageing is wear.
On an inflatable the cause decides, not the damage: a tear from impact is covered, porous fabric after years in the sun is not. The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
