Capsizing

Boat insurance term, area: Hull

A boat capsizes when it heels so far that it turns over and lies on its side or upside down. For dinghy sailors it is part of the sport; for yachts and motor boats it is rare and usually serious. The expensive part is often what follows rather than the capsize itself: water in the engine and electrics, lost equipment, salvage and towing. Example: a dinghy capsizes in a squall and the outboard is submerged.

What to check: Two questions for your own policy: is capsizing, and sinking as a result, named as an insured event under hull cover? And are salvage, recovery and the drying out of engine and electrics paid on top of the damage or deducted from the sum insured?
