International certificate of insurance

Boat insurance term, area: Contract

A multilingual document proving that insurance is in force. In countries where boat insurance is compulsory, such as Croatia, Italy and Spain, marinas ask for it before allocating a berth and officials ask for it during checks afloat. A certificate in English alone can cause delays, so British owners keeping a boat in the Mediterranean are well advised to carry one in the local language too.

What to check: Is a certificate provided, in which languages, and does it show the liability limit and the boat's details exactly as registered? Can a fresh copy be obtained quickly if it is lost or checked abroad?
